WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Lindsey Wilson softball's longest winning streak in five years came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a one-run loss to No. 15 Cumberlands (Ky.).
The 16th-ranked Blue Raiders scored the first run of the game when
Summer Ray grounded out to score
Sam Hartman in the second inning. A stalemate quickly ensued, however, as the Patriots pushed across the tying run in their half of the frame, then proceeded to keep the visitors scoreless the rest of the way.
Lindsey Wilson worked runners into scoring position in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Back-to-back one-out singles by
Kaiden Rodgers and
Natalie Wandrie in the latter of the three provided the Blue Raiders with their best chance to break the deadlock.
Meanwhile,
Kayden Murray and the defense kept Cumberlands' in check with four consecutive scoreless innings. A stretch from the fourth inning through the sixth included seven straight retired Patriots. The hosts ultimately found their break in the bottom of the seventh, plating one run necessary to end the game.
In the losing effort, Murray surrendered two earned runs on six hits, walked one, and struck out one.
Offensively, Rodgers led Lindsey Wilson with two hits.
The Blue Raiders begin a 10-game homestand at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 25 against Union Commonwealth (Ky.).
