Early Second-Half Run Gives Blue Raiders 65-54 Win over Brescia

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team out-scored visiting Brescia (Ky.) University 23-8 to start the second half en route to a 65-54 win tonight at Biggers Sports Center.

After trailing the Bearcats (3-4) 25-24 at the half, Lindsey Wilson scored 10 of the second half's first 12 points to grab a 34-27 lead four minutes into the half. The No. 9-ranked Blue Raiders (6-1) never trailed again.
"We made a couple of adjustments at halftime and the kids really responded," LWC men's basketball coach Paul Peck said. "We didn't do a good job on the boards in the first half and we settle for first open look instead of running the offense and getting easier, high percentage shots.

"We did much better in the second half on each adjustment and that helped us get the win against a quality opponent."

Brescia out-rebounded the Blue Raiders 21-16 in the first 20 minutes thanks to the Bearcats reserve Randy Cayasso. Cayasso came off the bench to grab eight first-half rebounds and added 13 points to help Brescia to the lead.

After the halftime pep talk, Lindsey Wilson turned the tables and out-rebounded Brescia 23-13. LWC ended the game out-rebounding Brescia 39-34.

The Bearcats cut the Blue Raider lead to 49-43 on a pair of Cayasso free throws with 8:03 left. Cayasso finished with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Over the next seven minutes the Blue Raiders and Bearcats exchanged baskets. The Lindsey Wilson lead reached as high as nine points and as low as six during the span.

Brescia's Andrew Howard -- who scored a team-high 18 points -- hit one of his three three-pointers with 34 seconds left to cut the LWC lead to 60-54. Howard -- who was fouled on the shot -- squandered a chance to cut the deficit to five, but missed the free throw.

Brescia -- who entered the game as the 11th best free throw shooting team in the NAIA at 73 percent -- made just six of 15 freebies in the game.

A fastbreak lay-up by senior Jeremy Johnson with 25 seconds left and a pair of free throws by junior reserve Tim Labka with 12 seconds put the game -- that featured four ties and 10 lead changes -- out of reach.

The Blue Raiders closed the game with a 5-0 run to win 65-54.

Lindsey Wilson junior Lloyd Lewis led the Blue Raiders with his third double-double of the season. Lewis scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Senior John Fitzgerald added 15 points and Labka contributed 10 points off the bench.
