Men's Tennis Falls in NAIA Region XI Finals to Freed-Hardeman

Box Score GLASGOW, Ky. -- The Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University men's tennis capture the 2006 NAIA Region XI Championship today with a 5-1 win over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College at Gorin Park.

The Lions earn the automatic bid into the 55th Annual NAIA Men's Tennis National Championships to be played May 15-19 in Mobile, Alabama.
Freed-Hardeman, the tournament's top-seed and NAIA No. 4-ranked, grabbed the 3-0 lead after sweeping all three double matches.

The Lions' No. 1 doubles team of Bruno Andrade and Everton Silva defeated Lindsey Wilson's Pablo Castanon and Leandro Gubler 8-5 to take the 1-0 lead. Freed doubled its lead as the No. 2 team of Ivan Besancon and Lukas Hanak beat LWC's Marko Begovic and Adrian Arroyave 8-4.

Freed-Hardeman's No. 3 team of Francisco Redondo and Brian Ly completed the sweep, defeating Eduard Khan and Alejandro Vial 8-6 for the 3-0 lead.

In singles, Lindsey Wilson grabbed the first point as Begovic defeated Besancon 7-5, 6-0 in No. 2 singles to cut the Freed-Hardeman lead to 3-1.

It would be the only point the second-seeded and No. 7-ranked Blue Raiders would get.

Hanak outlasted Khan 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to put the Lions one win away from the championship. No. 1 singles Redondo fought off triple break point in the third and final set to defeat Castanon 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to claim their second straight regional crown.

Despite the loss, Lindsey Wilson should remain high enough in the polls to receive an at-large bid into the national championships. Lindsey Wilson will learn its fate on May 10.
