Men's Basketball Falls to Union 95-74

HENDERSON, Tenn. -- Union (Tenn.) University confirmed their reputation as one of the best three-point shooting teams in the NAIA tonight in a 94-75 win over the Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team at the Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University Christmas Classic.

Union made their 13-of-23 three-pointers in the game to help the No. 22-ranked Bulldogs (5-3) build and maintain a double digit lead throughout much of the game. Union finished making 63.5 percent (33-of-52) of its shots.

Lindsey Wilson's inability to stop the potent Union offense didn't carry over on the offensive end. The Blue Raiders (6-5) countered the Union attack by making 57.4 percent (27-of-4) of their shots.

The loss is just the third under LWC Coach Paul Peck in 57 games when his team shoots at least 50 percent from the field.

"I thought we did a pretty good job tonight of getting a hand in their face (on the shot)," Peck said. "They just did a better job of making them.

"And Neaville seemed to make everything; he's the best pure shooter I've seen in a really long time, maybe ever."

Union junior guard Matt Neaville torched the Blue Raiders for 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting. The NAIA's leading scorer hit five of eight three-pointers.

Neaville led five Bulldogs in double figures. Junior forward Brian Lake added 13 points and senior Ryan Merriman, junior Tony Brown and sophomore Tucuma Alexander each added 12.

Four Blue Raiders reached double figures led by senior forward Lloyd Lewis' 16 points in his first game of the season after sitting out with a 10-game suspension.

Junior guard George White added a career-high 15 points, while senior forward Ralph Jennings and junior guard Antonio Logwood chipped in 11 points each.

Lindsey Wilson led briefly in the opening minutes of the first half, but Union sprinted to a 12-4 lead as Neaville scored 10 of his team's first 12 points. Neaville ended the first half with 18 points.

The Blue Raiders cut the lead to four (17-13) with 13 minutes in the first half, but Union answered with back-to-back three-points en route to a 41-32 lead at the break.

Any hopes for a Lindsey Wilson comeback ended early in the second half as the Bulldogs raced to a 14 point lead in the opening three minutes of the half en route to the 94-75 win.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 15, as the Blue Raiders face host Freed-Hardeman in the final day of the classic.
