Stewart's Hat Trick Helps Men's Soccer to 7-0 Win over Union University

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College senior midfielder Ryan Stewart scored three goals as the Blue Raider men's soccer team beat visiting Union (Tenn.) University 7-0 tonight at Lindsey Wilson Park.

Stewart scored the only goal of the first half at the 25:15 mark off a free kick from just outside the penalty area.

Despite out-shooting the visiting Bulldogs (1-3-0) 9-3 in the first 45 minutes, Lindsey Wilson took the 1-0 lead into the break.

The No. 7-ranked Blue Raiders wasted little time doubling their lead in the second half as Stewart found the back of the net 21 seconds into the half. Stewart found an opening -- off freshman Ryan Parker's second assist of the season -- just under the hands of Union goalkeeper Chris Lean to give Lindsey Wilson the 2-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson's Nathaniel Jafta scored a breakaway goal at the 62:33 mark to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead. Freshman Jose Espinoza led Jafta just beyond the center stripe and the junior midfielder netted his fifth goal of the season against a defenseless Lean.

Stewart completed his hat trick -- becoming the third Blue Raider this season to score at least three goals in a game -- seven minutes later on an unassisted goal into bottom right corner. Stewart ended the night tied for the team lead with Jafta and freshman Jakob Rittig in goals with five this season.

Freshman reserve forward Frederick Were scored the game's next two goals at the 70:21 and 78:46 marks. The goals were his first two career goals.

Sophomore midfielder Joe Adams ended the night's scoring in the 89th minute with his first goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Adam Howard.

The seven goals tie a season-high for the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson opened the season with a 7-0 win over St. Xavier (Ill.) University.

Tonight's Lindsey Wilson and Union game was the second game of the first night of the men's KELME Classic. In the opener, Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University upset No. 19-ranked Lindenwood (Mo.) University 4-2.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday against Lindenwood in the final night of the KELME Classic. Union and Cardinal Stritch will kick-off the night of soccer at 5 p.m. CT at Lindsey Wilson Park.
