Men's Basketball Struggles Offensively, Loses at Cumberlands 49-46

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team lost a defensive battle on Saturday falling to host University of the Cumberlands 49-46 at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

The two teams combined to make just 35 percent of their shots, including 7-of-24 from beyond the three-point arc.

Each team's stagnate offense prevented any type of separation as Lindsey Wilson's seven point lead in the first half turned out to be the largest of the game.

Cumberlands (12-8, 1-0 in the Mid-South Conference) scored the final five points of the first half and trailed 20-18 at the break.

The back-and-forth battled spilled into the second half with seven ties and 10 lead changes.

Lindsey Wilson sophomore reserve Stefan Juzbasic scored his only basket of the game at the 10:31 mark to give Lindsey Wilson a 37-34 lead.

Cumberlands responded scoring 11 of the next 15 points to take a 45-41 lead with 5:25 left.

The Blue Raiders (12-8, 0-1) scored four straight to tie the game for the seventh and final time with 3:26 remaining.

Cumberlands junior Terrance Asmond provided back-to-back plays that proved to be instrumental to the Patriots win.

Asmond stripped Lindsey Wilson junior guard Quintez Thomas and was fouled just trying to give the host a lead down the stretch.

After making the first free throw, Asmond missed the second but secured the offensive rebounds and immediately found senior Mike Gibson for the dunk and a 48-45 lead. Gibson finished with 10 points.

Lindsey Wilson senior Donte' Williams cut the Cumberlands lead to two with a free throw with 55 seconds left. His second freebie was negated after a lane violation.

Cumberlands sophomore Dustin Fothergill -- who finished with 11 points off the bench -- missed a three-pointer as the shot clock expired in the Patriots next possession. But Asmond corralled the rebound and was fouled with 10 seconds left.

Asmond made the first free throw and missed the second. Gibson grabbed the Cumberlands' 10th offensive rebound of the game before Lindsey Wilson junior forward Sam Walton swatted the ball out of bounds.

The Blue Raiders had one final chance to extend the game following Cumberlands sophomore Chad Byron's missed free throw and a Lindsey Wilson timeout.

Senior forward Tim Labka's inbounds pass to half court with 3.4 seconds left sailed over junior guard George White's outstretched hands for a turnover and a Cumberlands win.

White led the Blue Raiders with 13 points. Walton added 12 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Cumberlands junior Luke Gibson joined Fothergill and Gibson in double figures with 12 points.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, January 31, as the Blue Raiders travel to No. 9-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) University.
