COLUMBIA, Ky. - Sophomore forward Frederick Were banged home a goal and broke a 2-2 tie in the 78th minute as No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson defeated the University of the Cumberlands in a 3-2 thriller to claim the Mid-South Conference championship tonight at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
The win gives Lindsey Wilson (17-1-1) its ninth consecutive MSC title.
Cumberlands' junior midfielder Luis Souza scored the game's first goal off a perfect corer kick from senior defender John Mills to give the No. 14-ranked Patriots (14-4-2) a 1-0 lead.
In the 57th minute the Blue Raiders evened the score as freshman forward Besart Mazreku accepted a cross from freshman forward Moses Aduny and tapped it into the corner of the net. It was his seventh goal of the season.
Cumberlands responded with a goal in the 62nd minute as Lokahi Bounds scored from deep inside the penalty box. The goal gave the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
Lindsey Wilson regained the momentum in the last 20 minutes of the match. Despite the stellar play of junior goalkeeper Roland Day -- who finished with 12 saves on the night -- Lindsey Wilson scored in the 70th and 78th minute to win the championship.
Aduny and Mazreku switched roles on the Blue Raiders' second goal. Aduny hit the target on a cross from Mazreku to tie the game at 2-2. The goal is Aduny's team-leading 14th goal of the season.
A little more than seven minutes later, Were scored the eventual game-winner in the right corner of the goal.
With the win, Lindsey Wilson clinches a berth for the NAIA National Tournament. The Blue Raiders will wait for the final NAIA National Coaches Poll to be released on Sunday to see their seeding for the tournament.
