KENOSHA, Wis. -- A pair of Lindsey Wilson College women's cross country individuals competed at the 29th NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championships today at the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course.
Senior Cassie Niersel and Junior Monicah Maiyo finished with almost identical times in the 327-woman field. The pair qualified for the national championship for being in the top-five individuals not on the winning team at the Mid-South Conference Championships.
Niersel finished in 284th place with a time of 20 minutes and 44 seconds. Maiyo crossed the line in 285th with a time of 20:45.
Indiana Institute of Technology senior Alissa McKaig won the individual national title with a time 16:41. Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University captured the team title with 66 points.
Prior to the national championship, Niersel and junior Amanda Johnson were named 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. Niersel and Johnson earned the honor reserved for juniors and seniors with a 3.50 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
