Men's Basketball Falls to Cumberlands in MSC Semifinals

Box Score

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team's dreams of the Mid-South Conference Tournament title ended today in the tournament's semifinals at the Frankfort Civic Center.

Lindsey Wilson (23-8) lost to No. 2-seed University of the Cumberlands 75-56 in a game that featured a precision-like play from the Patriots and a weary Blue Raider club.

Cumberlands advances to Sunday's finals, while Lindsey Wilson must wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid into the NAIA National Tournament. The brackets will be released next Wednesday.

Twenty-four hours after the Blue Raiders survived a 64-60 overtime win over Campbellsville University, Lindsey Wilson was no match for a well-rested Cumberlands team.

Cumberlands carved up the usually strong Blue Raider defense, connecting on 54.7 percent (29-of-53) of their shots led by senior forward and MSC Player of the Year Luke Fitzgerald, who made 9-for-10 from the field.

Lindsey Wilson entered the game allowing its opponents just 38.7 percent from the field.

While Cumberlands was hitting on all cylinders on the offensive end, the Blue Raiders struggled to find their offensive game. Lindsey Wilson made just 44.4 percent (20-of-45) of its shots, including 1-for-6 from three-point range. The Blue Raiders also committed 18 turnovers, resulting in 24 points.

After trailing by as many as 13 points in the opening half, Lindsey Wilson cut the Patriots lead to 49-42 with 11:51 left in the game. But Cumberlands scored 19 of the next 23 points to take its largest lead (68-46) with just under three remaining and cruised to a 75-56 win and sweep of the three games against the Blue Raiders this season.

Fitzgerald ended the night with his 11th double-double of the season with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Dustin Fothergill came off the bench to score 11 points.

Lindsey Wilson senior Sam Walton scored 14 points and junior Andrija Tintor added 13 points. Junior Eric McPherson -- who scored 32 points in 45 minutes of action in the Blue Raiders' overtime win on Friday -- finished with six points.
