Baker Serves up 21 Points, Men's Basketball Defeats Cumberland 60-57

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Charles Baker cooked up a dozen points and then nearly made the order a double, finishing with a game-high 21, leading the Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team to a 60-57 win against Cumberland (Tenn.) University in the LWC Classic at Biggers Sports Center on Friday.

Sophomore Kalen Kimberland added 19 points and freshman Chase Cox netted 10 for the Blue Raiders. Senior Cornell Thomas led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Bulldogs got a team-high 18 points from Walter Simon, while Lamar Brinkley and Lindal Yarbrough also added double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Baker and Kimberland opened the game with back-to-back threes to give Lindsey Wilson a 6-2 lead. Cumberland, however, roared back in front 12-10 with 14 minutes to play in the first half on a shot by Brinkley and didn't relinquish the lead until there was 9:25 to play in the second half.

Another three by Baker pushed Lindsey Wilson back into the lead (44-43) and started a streak of two lead changes and three ties before the Blue Raiders were able to put the game away in the closing seconds.

After two made free throws by Yarbrough, Lindsey Wilson led by just a point with six seconds to play. Kimberland was fouled on the inbounds pass, allowing him to step up to the line and knock down both free throws.

Down by three with five seconds to play, the Blue Raiders decided not to foul and forced Michael Sweat to put up a last-second three from the top of the key that fell short, giving the Blue Raiders the win.

Lindsey Wilson struggled from the field most of the game before a late spree of made shots pushed the average up to 40 percent on 18-of-45 shooting. The Blue Raiders did hit 7-of-20 shots from behind the arc, while Cumberland managed to hit just two 3-pointers.

The Blue Raiders once again outrebounded an opponent 34-31, but turnovers continued to be an issue, committing 15 with just nine assists. Cumberland turned the ball over 16 times with 10 assists.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action in the LWC Classic at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday against Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University at Biggers Sports Center.

The Trojans lost to Campbellsville (Ky.) University 69-67 in the opening game of the classic. Campbellsville will play Cumberland in tomorrow's opener of the classic at noon.
