Seven Straight: Men's Basketball Outlasts Pikeville 85-76

Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Kalen Kimberland poured in a career-high 21 points and Charles Baker and Justin Archie added 12 and 10 points, respectively to help the Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team beat Pikeville (Ky.) College 85-76 on Saturday at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center.

Justin Hicks scored a season-high 23 points to pace Pikeville (8-2, 1-1 MSC), while Vance Cooksey added 19 points in the losing effort. Andre Thornton and Trevor Setty also scored in double figures for the Bears with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

With under 25 seconds to play and leading 79-73, Lindsey Wilson (8-1, 2-0 MSC) got six straight free throws to go down to seal the win. Senior Cornell Thomas started the trend with two makes, followed by Archie and Kimberland both knocking down two each to push Lindsey Wilson in front 85-76.

After a back and forth affair to open the game, Baker put Lindsey Wilson in front for good with a jumper at the 7:56 mark of the first half as the Blue Raiders were on their way to seven straight wins.

That's not to say Pikeville didn't make things interesting.

A 10-0 second-half run got the Bears within six, 65-59, with 10:19 to play. The comeback continued all the way up to a basket by Andre Thornton that brought Pikeville within two, 70-68, with 7:23 to play, but that's as close as they would get.

A total team effort was in effect as all 11 players that played for the Blue Raiders scored. Players such as freshman Chase Cox put in just 12 minutes, but did so much in limited time, scoring four points and grabbing four rebounds.

Lindsey Wilson shot just 47.7 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from three-point range, while Pikeville was nearly identical, finishing 47.4 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from three.

The Blue Raiders, however, did dominate the rebounding battle 46-30, including a 19-6 advantage on the offensive glass.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 8 p.m. CT on Thursday, Dec. 9 against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at Biggers Sports Center.
