Cumberlands Outlasts Men's Basketball in Overtime 79-74

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- Chad Byron hit a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds on the clock to force overtime, and then sealed the game for the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) with a late free throw in the extra period to top the Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team 79-74 on Saturday at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

Ahead 62-61 with 11.6 seconds left in regulation, Kalen Kimberland hit a pair of free throws to give the Blue Raiders a 64-61 lead. Then Byron broke free on a curl to the left side of the top of the key to bury the game-tying 3-pointer.

Andrija Tintor's pass to mid court was deflected out of bounds before it could reach Eric McPherson as time expired in regulation.

Byron continued his hot streak in overtime, hitting a pair of three's in the period, with the second pushing the Patriot lead to seven (74-67) with two minutes to play.

Trailing 76-71 with 10.6 seconds left in overtime, Tintor knocked down a contested three to pull within two, allowing the Blue Raiders to send Byron to the free-throw line.

Byron hit the first from the charity stripe, but missed the second, giving Lindsey Wilson a chance to tie the game. With time winding down, however, Kimberland was trying to get free for a 3-point attempt with the ball, but stepped on the sideline before getting off an attempt.

Lindsey Wilson trailed Cumberlands 27-15 with 5:30 left in the first half before holding the Patriots without a field goal for nearly six minutes. The Blue Raiders went on an 11-0 run to enter halftime down by just one point (27-26).

Tintor had a monster game for the Blue Raiders, netting a game-high 27 points and grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Tintor finished 4-for-5 from 3-point range.

Kimberland and Kemo Duncan both added 10 points for Lindsey Wilson.

Cumberlands was led by Byron and Tanner Jacobs with 20 points each, while Brandon Russ added 17. Jacobs led the Patriots on the boards with nine rebounds.

The Blue Raiders shot 58.1 percent from the field and 50.0 percent (7-for-14) on 3-pointers for the game. Cumberlands hit 43.6 percent of its field goals and 45.5 percent of its 3-point shots. The Patriots posted a 35-28 advantage on the glass.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Feb. 18 at the University of Campbellsville (Ky.).
