Savage's Threes Push Campbellsville Past Men's Basketball 79-60

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Shawn Savage hit seven 3-pointers to stun the Blue Raiders out of the gate and help Campbellsville (Ky.) University beat Lindsey Wilson College 79-60 on Thursday at the Powell Athletic Center.

Senior Jeremiah Diebler paced the Blue Raiders with 12 points on four 3-pointers and freshman Chase Cox and junior Justin Archie each added 11 points in the loss.

Caleb Harris led the Tigers with 25 points and Ja Vaughn Espritt backed him up with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Savage finished with 23 points after his barrage from behind the arc.

A fast-paced start that saw senior Brandon Clemons knock down a 3-pointer and the Blue Raiders take a 5-0 lead quickly slowed down as Campbellsville (16-13, 9-8 MSC) pulled ahead by one at 8-7 with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.

Then over the next five minutes Savage hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Tigers and Esperitt knocked down a runner in the paint to pull ahead by 10 (21-11).

Savage simply couldn't miss over the next few minutes, hitting three after three to help the Tigers lead by as many as 17 points in the half. Savage finished 5-of-8 from 3-point range in the half as the Tigers shot 61.5 percent from behind the arc as a team. Lindsey Wilson (19-9, 10-7 MSC) hit just two of its nine three-point attempts.

The situation didn't improve for Lindsey Wilson early in the second half as Savage continued to be hot from the outside and Espritt came through with a three-point play underneath to keep the Tigers in control with a 21-point lead with 14 minutes to play.

Needing some momentum to attempt any type of comeback, Diebler checked into the game and immediately started to fill up the box score from 3-point range. The senior hit three 3-pointers with the last bringing Lindsey Wilson within 12 (58-46) with just under 10 minutes to play.

Diebler came out of the game and the offensive momentum came to an end as the Tigers rallied back to an 18-point lead before a Blue Raider timeout with 4:56 to play. Espritt once again got past the Lindsey Wilson post defense and got fouled for another three-point play.

By the end of the game the Tigers had cleared their bench and were on their way to closing out with the 19-point win to finish off the season sweep of the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson turned the ball over just six times while Campbellsville turned it over 21 times, but the sloppy play didn't affect the outcome as the Blue Raiders struggled to get the deficit back into single digits in the second half.

Campbellsville finished 11-of-18 from behind the arc for 61.1 percent and shot an even 60 percent from the field. Lindsey Wilson hit just 34.3 percent from the field and hit 8-of-22 3-pointers for 36.4 percent.

The Tigers also outrebounded the Blue Raiders 38-33 and had 12 assists compared to just five for Lindsey Wilson.

The Blue Raiders return to action at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Saint Catharine (Ky.) College.
