No. 18 Men's Basketball Comes Back to Beat Rio Grande 73-70

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Down by two with under 30 seconds to play Chase Cox got loose in the corner and knocked down a contested three-pointer that helped 18th ranked Lindsey Wilson College pull off an improbable comeback against Rio Grande, 73-70, on Saturday in Mid-South Conference action in Newt Oliver Arena.

The Blue Raiders trailed 70-61 with two minutes and 29 seconds to play, but at that point the rims closed up on the RedStorm.

Rio Grande failed to score the rest of the game and Lindsey Wilson reeled off 12 straight points to take control of a game that they looked completely out of just a few minutes before.

Senior Chase Spreen led Lindsey Wilson (11-4, 3-1 MSC) with 17 points, including a 9-of-12 showing at the free-throw line, with many coming in the game's final minutes. The sophomore Cox hit the shot of the game and finished with 13 points, while juniors Darren Ballou and Wes Hanspard each tallied 10 points.

Shaun Gunnell controlled the paint and finished with a game-high 20 points for Rio Grande (9-6, 1-3 MSC), while Turrell Morris added 15 and Brad Cubbie scored 10. Morris led the RedStorm with three 3-pointers.

Lindsey Wilson led 17-9 early in the first half, but the physical RedStorm quickly rallied back to take a five-point lead at halftime.

Rio Grande led by as many as 10 points in the second half on two occasions, but the resilient Blue Raiders forced the RedStorm into 15 turnovers for the game and three in the final minute that they capitalized on to steal the win.

Both teams shot the ball well, with Rio Grande at 47.4 percent from the field and Lindsey Wilson connecting on 53.2 percent of its shots.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT against Shawnee State (Ohio) University in Biggers Sports Center.
