No. 10 Football wins fifth straight; beats Bluefield 69-10

Box Score

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Eight different Blue Raiders scored a touchdown today as the Lindsey Wilson football team beat host Bluefield (Va.) 69-10 at Mitchell Stadium.

Lindsey Wilson improves to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the Mid-South Conference East Division with the win. The eight wins tie the program's single-season record for victories -- set last season.

Today's win -- coupled with Georgetown's (Ky.) 42-12 win over Union (Ky.) -- sets up a showdown of the two East unbeatens next week at Blue Raider Stadium. The winner earns the divisional title and the automatic bid into the NAIA Football Championship Series.

Today, Lindsey Wilson scored 27 first-quarter points and never looked back en route to a fifth-straight win.

Tavis Elzy, Emilio Gonzalez and Jalen Sublett all caught touchdown passes in the first quarter while Josh Haney rushed for a two-yard score for a 27-0 lead at the end of one quarter.

The three touchdown receptions featured three different passers as four different Blue Raiders recorded a touchdown toss in the game.

Lindsey Wilson quarterback Branden Cresap connected with Elzy for his 26th touchdown pass of the season. The 26-yard touchdown pass was Cresap's 98th of his career. He added his 99th in the third quarter as he finished 15-of-24 for 191 yards and the two scores.

After the Haney touchdown made it 14-0, Gonzalez caught a 10-yard touchdown from kicker Caleb Keeton on a fake field goal. Holder Michael Thrower took the snap and tossed it over his head to Keeton who found Gonzalez in the back of the end zone for the 20-0 lead.

A little more than two minutes later, Thrower lived up to his name as he took a lateral from Cresap and passed to a streaking Sublett for a 31-yard touchdown.

Bluefield (3-7, 1-4 MSC East) scored its lone points of the half on a James Gunn's 31-yard field goal with 12:30 left in the half.

Lindsey Wilson quickly answered with two more touchdowns -- a blocked punt return for a score by Michael Brooks and a sweep run by Cortez Barber -- to take a 41-3 lead into the half.

Barber -- who became the program's single-season reception leader during the game with his 47 catches -- scored his second touchdown of the day with a three-yard grab for a 48-3 lead.

Bluefield's Adrian Pope -- who finished with a game-high 104 rushing yards -- scored the only Ram touchdown of the day midway through the third quarter.

The Blue Raiders responded with three more touchdowns -- an Edwin Thomas run, a Blake Roberts catch from Dylan Beasley and a Cory Davenport 60-yard run -- for the 69-10 win.

Beasley's touchdown toss made it four players with a touchdown pass during the game. He was also one of six players to finish the game with a completion.

Lindsey Wilson out-gained its host 462-336 during the game. Defensively, the Blue Raiders finished with five takeaways, including interceptions by Da'shad Goldston and Eric Shaw.

The Blue Raiders -- who are averaging 49 points per game this season -- has scored 209 points over the last three weeks since coming off their bye week.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 15 as the Blue Raiders host Georgetown on Senior Day at Blue Raider Stadium.
