Men's Soccer plays to 0-0 draw with Union on Tuesday

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Lindsey Wilson men's soccer and Union (Ky.) played to a scoreless draw at Walter S. Reuling Stadium on Tuesday night.

Both teams came into the night tied at No.11 in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll, and the squads were also even on the field with neither finding the back of the net.

The Blue Raiders (11-3-1) outshot the Bulldogs (11-0-2) 18-7 with a 5-1 shot on goal advantage. Lindsey Wilson outshot Union 5-1 in the first half, 9-3 in the second half, and 4-3 in two overtime periods, but were unable to get a shot past Union keeper Marcelo Mercuri, who recorded five saves.

Union nearly stole the win in the 89th minute of regulation off of a corner kick, but Franco Roman cleared the line with a header to keep the game scoreless.

Union came into the game averaging 2.9 goals per game and 15.6 shots per game. The Bulldogs were held scoreless for the second time this season. They also played to a scoreless draw with Tennessee Wesleyan on Sept. 16. The Blue Raiders were averaging 3.6 goals and 18.6 shots coming into the game, and failed to score for the first time this season.

The game was physical at times with 13 combined fouls and seven yellow cards. The Blue Raiders played the last three minutes a man down after a red card was issued to a defender for disrupting a clear goal scoring opportunity. The Blue Raider defensive wall blocked the ensuing free kick and cleared the ball to prevent Union from capitalizing on the foul.

The Blue Raiders travel to play Shawnee State (Ohio) at Shawnee Turf on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
