Box Score RICHMOND, Ky. -- No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson went toe-to-toe with host Eastern Kentucky today before ultimately falling 4-3 at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
The difference in the match proved to be the doubles as the two teams split the six singles matches during the nearly four-hour match.
Eastern Kentucky seized the 1-0 lead after taking both the second-seeded and third-seeded doubles matches 8-1. The two teams played NCAA rules where one doubles point was awarded for winning the best two out of three matches.
In singles play, EKU's Ramon Van Flyman pushed the Colonels lead to 2-0 after taking down Raul Mendez 6-3, 6-2 in the third-seeded singles match.
Edberg Espinoza notched the first Lindsey Wilson (2-2) point in the top-seeded match defeating Alex Alvaro. Espinoza won the opening set 6-4 before closing out the match with an 8-6 second-set tiebreaker win to cut the Blue Raider deficit to 2-1.
Eastern (4-3) regained its two-match advantage with a win at the second-seeded match as Daridge Saidi topped Denis Porcic 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4).
Francisco Charters once again cut the EKU lead to one match with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over Sebastian Mueller at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first set, Charters won the second set to force a third and decisive set. Charters and Mueller battled to a tiebreak where Mueller won the first three points. Charters would win five straight points en route to taking the tiebreak 7-4.
Eastern Kentucky claimed the fourth point and the overall match win in the fifth-seeded match as Diogo Soares defeated Ignacio Huertas 6-0, 6-4.
Pablo Vilches and Jonas Stropus completed their match with Vilches coming out on top 6-3, 6-0 setting the final score at 4-3.
"Today we came out and competed against a very good team," Lindsey Wilson tennis coach Daniel Finn said. "Obviously were not happy about our slow start, but we battled the entire match and that's definitely something we can build on."
Lindsey Wilson returns to the courts at 2 p.m. CT on Thursday, Feb. 19, as the Blue Raiders face No. 12-ranked Graceland (Iowa) in Red Oak, Iowa.
