PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's golf team took second place at the Mid-South Conference Spring Tournament on Tuesday, finishing just one stroke off the lead at the StoneCrest Golf Course.
It was a battle at the top as the top-three finishers were just two strokes apart, but ultimately the Blue Raiders fell one stroke behind tournament winner Cumberlands (Ky.). Pikeville (Ky.) finished in third place, one stroke behind Lindsey Wilson.
The Blue Raiders shot a two-day total 610 (303-307) to finish 34 strokes above par as a team. Cumberlands won the tournament with a 609 (296-313) and Pikeville finished third at 611 (305-306) in the 10-team tournament.
Chris Butler provided the top Blue Raider finish at the day tying for third place after a 6-over par 150 (76-74). He recorded five birdies during the tournament, the fourth most among the field of 58 golfers. His 2-under par scoring on par-5s and even scoring on par-3s were both the second-best results in the tournament.
Not far behind Butler finished Oliver Cowl in a tied for ninth place after a 9-over par 153 (76-77). Cowl led the Blue Raiders in pars notching 24 out the possible 36 during the two days. He finished 1-over par on the par-3s and even on the par-5s.
Ryan Nowe and Jonathon Grabara both finished tied for 11th place with 10-over par 154s. Nowe (76-78) also recorded five birdies on the day and had 21 pars, the second-most for a Blue Raider. His 3-over par scoring on the par-4s proved to be fourth-best at the tournament.
Grabara (77-77) finished with a team-high seven birdies, the second-most at the tournament, and finished the best on par-3s at 3-under par.
Federico Navarro completed the team with a 12-over par 156 (79-77) in a tie for 17th place. He recorded four birdies and finished the best on par-5s among all competitors, notching a score of 3-under par.
Zach Madewell, competing as an individual, also finished tied for 17th place with a 12-over par 156. He shaved eight strokes off his opening round 82 to put in a 2-over par 74 on the final day. Madewell had six birdies and was the lone Blue Raider to record an eagle at the tournament.
Pikeville's Will Boyd led wire-to-wire to capture the individual tournament title with his 1-over par 145 (70-75). Campbellsville's (Ky.) Michael Newton finished second at 4-over par and Cumberlands' Martin Jacobsson tied for third with Butler at 6-over par.
The Blue Raiders now prepare for the Brickyard Classic in Indianapolis, Ind., on April 13-14.
