Box Score NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team defeated Asbury (Ky.) by a 7-2 score on Friday afternoon at the Bluegrass Racquet Club.
The fifth-ranked Blue Raiders (13-2) have now won 11-consecutive matches dating back to Feb. 19. Asbury falls to 8-2 on the season, suffering just their second loss on the season.
Asbury took control early and led in all three doubles matches to begin the day.
The Eagles were the first ones on the scoreboard as Nathan Schley and Scott Layton upended Edberg Espinoza and Francisco Charters at the top doubles position by an 8-4 margin to take an early 1-0 lead.
At the No. 3 doubles position, Pablo Vilches and Ignacio Huertas trailed 4-1 to Daniel Harris and Nesbert Vaval before the Blue Raider duo won seven-straight points to take the set and tie the overall match at 1-1.
Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez captured the final doubles point at the No. 2 position in another comeback effort. The Lindsey Wilson duo came from 5-2 down and won six-straight points to defeat Ty Abraham and Joshua Abraham 8-5 and put the Blue Raiders ahead 2-1 entering singles play.
Once in singles play, the Blue Raiders were able to seize control of the match.
Espinoza led 4-1 in the opening set at the top singles position before his opponent retired to put Lindsey Wilson up 3-1.
Mendez then won 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles position to make it 4-1. Porcic sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 2 position, making it 5-1 with three matches to go.
The other Asbury point on the day came at the No. 5 singles position where Charters was forced to retire due to an illness.
"Asbury plays an aggressive style of doubles and came at us really hard early," head coach Daniel Finn said. "I thought we did a great job today of regrouping and getting back into the match when we faced adversity. Our depth and fight was definitely a major factor in being able to gain control and get back into the match when things got tight."
The Blue Raiders return to Columbia to host St. Catharine (Ky.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
