Women's Cross Country finishes atop non-Division I schools at Belmont Open

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson women's cross country team opened the 2015 season by taking first place in the non-NCAA Division I race at the Belmont (Tenn.) Open on Saturday morning at Percy Warner State Park.

Lindsey Wilson finished with 28 total team points to beat out Spalding (Ky.) and Campbellsville (Ky.), who finished with 37 and 55 points respectively, in the 5K race.

The Belmont Open was broken down into two final standings categories, one consisting of the three non-Division I schools, and the other consisting of NCAA Division I schools including, Lipscomb (Tenn.), Vanderbilt (Tenn.), Belmont, UT-Chattanooga (Tenn.) Alabama-Birmingham and Tennessee State.

The Blue Raiders finished with a total team time of 1:47:58, which would have been good enough for sixth place in the Division I standings.

Nikki Coffey provided the top Lindsey Wilson finish as the top finisher in the non-DI race (36th overall) with a personal best time of 19:24:0. Maria Cozzens finished in second place (54th overall) behind Coffey with a time of 20:44:1.

Allyson Davis also finished in the top five in fourth place (60th overall) in the non-DI race with a time of 21:40.4. Mia Cornette added a top-10 placement with an eighth-place finish (67th overall) at 22:56.6. Abbie Chandler was the final Blue Raider to score finishing in 13th place (72nd overall) at 23:12.8.

Lipscomb captured the team title in the NCAA Division I school standings while Belmont's Hannah Wittman took first place at the event with a time of 17:23.6, beating out the second-place finisher by 0:00.7 in the field of 91 harriers.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Sept. 19 at the Berea (Ky.) Invitational.
