Shawnee State edges out Men's Basketball, 66-58, in Portsmouth on Thursday night

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball looked to capture their first road win of the season Thursday night in Portsmouth, Ohio, against Shawnee State (Ohio), but the Blue Raiders fell short as the Bears won, 66-58.

Dmitry Utolin led Lindsey Wilson (11-6, 3-3 Mid-South Conference) with 19 points, while DJ Lambert chipped in with 11 points and Ja'Ln Williams added 10 points of the bench against Shawnee State (9-8, 3-2 MSC).

After Lindsey Wilson scored the first two points of the game, Shawnee State went on a 9-2 to run to take their largest lead of the first half with 14:11 to play before halftime. The Blue Raiders were able to make it a one-point game, but the Bears stretched their lead out once again as they lead 12-8 at the halfway point in the first half.

Neither team took control of the game midway through the first half as the largest lead for either side was five points and the game was tied five times through the first 12:07 of play. With the game tied at 17 with 7:53 left in the half, Lindsey Wilson went on a 9-0 run to jump out to a 26-17 lead at the 4:29 mark in the first half after Williams knocked down a three-pointer.

The Bears battled back with a 6-0 run to pull within three points with less than three minutes to play in the first half. After Shawnee State scored with eight seconds left in the first half, the Blue Raiders took a 30-25 lead into the half.

In an evenly matched first half, Lindsey Wilson shot 41.4 percent from the field compared to 41.7 percent from the Bears.

The Blue Raiders came out cold to start the second half as they were held without a point for the first 3:28 of the period. Over that stretch, Shawnee State went on a 5-0 run to tie the game 30-30. Hannes Erhardt got the Blue Raiders on the board in the second half with a free throw, but the Bears regained the lead for the first time in the second half after Frederick Moore hit a three for Shawnee State.

Lindsey Wilson countered with a 7-0 run to retake the lead at 38-33 with 12:53 left in regulation. A game of run ensued as the Bears took over the momentum with a 6-0 run over the next 1:20. After the Blue Raiders led 45-42 at the 9:32 mark of the second half, Shawnee State went on another run as they outscored Lindsey Wilson 9-2 over a span of 1:13.

The Bears extended their lead to seven points with 2:28 left in regulation after Dante Dunston hit a pair of free throws to give Shawnee State a 59-52 lead. The Blue Raiders came back to pull within three-points with 46 seconds left in regulation, but they could not get any closer as Shawnee State came away with a 66-58 victory.

To finish the game, Lindsey Wilson shot 35.5 percent from the floor, which was their lowest field-goal percentage this season. The 58 points from the Blue Raiders was their second lowest point total this season, after they were held to 56 points in their last game against Cumberlands (Ky.). Shawnee State finished the game shooting 42.3 percent for the game.

The Blue Raiders are on the road once again this Saturday as they face No. 2 Georgetown (Ky.) for a 3 p.m. CT tipoff.
