Wallace's last second three-pointer leads Men's Basketball past No. 5 Pikeville in MSC Quarterfinals, 72-71

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team upset No. 5 Pikeville (Ky.), 72-71, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Bryan Wallace's last second three-pointer completed the upset as the seventh-seeded Blue Raiders (17-13) advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.

Dmitry Utolin led Lindsey Wilson with 20 points and Wallace chipped in with 17. Charles Sutton was the final Blue Raider to reach double figures as he tallied 16 points. Christian Leach led all scorers in the game with 24 points for the Bears (25-5).

Lindsey Wilson fell behind early as Pikeville opened the game on 5-0 run, but the Blue Raiders scored the next four points to stay in the game in the early going.

The first lead of the game for Lindsey Wilson came with12:19 to play as Utolin knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to give the Blue Raiders a 14-11. The lead changed hands twice more and after Lindsey Wilson regained the lead with 10:57 to play in the half; they were able to hang on to the lead for most of the remaining time in the second half.

Pikeville closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 35-33 lead at the half.

The Blue Raiders shot 38.5 percent in the first half, while Pikeville shot 36.4 percent from the floor.

The Bears held onto their lead, but through the first 10 minutes of action in the half they were unable to pull away from the Blue Raiders. The Bears extended their lead to eight points, 50-42, but Lindsey Wilson brought the game back within two points at the 11:10 mark in the second half.

A game of short runs opened up through the middle of the second half as Pikeville opened up a pair of eight point leads, but the Blue Raiders battled back each time to keep the game within reach and they pulled within one point twice.

Lindsey Wilson was able to finally claw all the way back as they tied the game, 69-69, with 42 seconds left in the game. The Bears were able to regain the lead on their ensuing possession after Trey Rakes hit a shot in the paint with 19 seconds left in regulation.

On the next possession for the Blue Raiders, Wallace was able to find some open space beyond the arc as he knocked down the game winning three-pointers with three second left on the clock. The three-pointer from Wallace gave Lindsey Wilson their first lead of the second half.

A half-court shot just before the buzzer from Pikeville was off the mark as the Blue Raiders came away with a 72-71 victory.

Lindsey Wilson shot 45.8 percent for the game after making 17-of-33 shots in the second half. The Bears went 13-for-22 from the floor as they finished the game shooting 45.5 percent. Pikeville outrebounded the Blue Raiders, 39-28 in the game.

The Blue Raiders are set to make their first appearance in the semifinals of the MSC Tournament since the 2012-13 season, when they went on to win the conference tournament title.

Next up for Lindsey Wilson is a contest against the winner of the Life (Ga.)-Cumberlands (Ky.) game in the MSC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET at the Frankfort Convention Center.
