Men's Tennis concludes regular season with 7-2 win over Pikeville on Senior Day

COLUMBIA, Ky. — The seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team swept the singles matches on its way to a 7-2 win over Pikeville (Ky.) in its final regular-season match at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.

With the Senior Day victory, the Blue Raiders clinched their 12th outright Mid-South Conference regular-season title and the top seed in the MSC Tournament. Lindsey Wilson went undefeated in regular-season MSC play.

The Bears (10-3, 4-2 MSC), who are receiving votes in the coaches poll, won 2-of-3 doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead, but the Blue Raiders 13-3, 6-0 MSC) responded by going 6-0 in the singles matches to secure the victory.

Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez, the sixth-ranked doubles team in the NAIA, cruised to an 8-1 win over Diego Reboredo and Eric Bernabeu in the top-seeded doubles match to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.

Pikeville tied the match at 1-1 behind the doubles team of Fernando Fernandez and Juan Reyes, who defeated Tomas Depiaggio and Javier Raya by a score of 8-5 in the third-seeded doubles match.

In the final doubles match to finish, The Bears' Jan Kappes and Enzo Douillac edged out Alonso Tellez and Ignacio Huertas 8-6 in the second-seeded doubles match to put Pikeville on top, 2-1.

The Blue Raiders won all six singles matches to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 win.

In the second-seeded singles match, Mendez, the 40th-ranked singles player in the NAIA, defeated Fernandez in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), which tied the team score at 2-2.

No. 24 Porcic also won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) over Kappes in the top-seeded singles match to give the Blue Raiders the 3-2 advantage.

Tellez dropped the first set 6-3 to Douillac in the third-seeded singles match, but Tellez responded by winning the final two sets (6-2, 6-3) to take the match (3-6, 6-2, 6-3).

Depiaggio and Raya rolled to straight set victory's in the fifth and sixth-seeded doubles matches, respectively. Depiaggio won 6-0, 6-4 over Reyes to clinch the team win for Lindsey Wilson, and Raya posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Reboredo.

In the final singles match to finish, Huertas, who is ranked 49th in the NAIA in singles, outlasted Casas (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) in the fourth-seeded singles match to make the final team score 7-2 in favor of Lindsey Wilson.

Prior to the match, Mendez and Huertas were acknowledged for their contributions to the Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team as part of Senior Day.

Lindsey Wilson, which defeated eight opponents that were either ranked or receiving votes in the national poll during the regular-season, earned a first-round bye in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, which begins on Thursday, April 21, at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
