Men's Basketball defeated by No. 12 Pikeville 80-69 Thursday night

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team dropped a Mid-South Conference matchup to No. 12-ranked Pikeville (Ky.) 80-69 Thursday night at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (13-6, 1-3 MSC) had three players in double figures led by Bryan Wallace who scored 18 points. Allen Costley chipped in with 14 points and a career-high three blocks and Charles Sutton scored 12 points. Hannes Erhardt led the team in rebounds, matching a career-high with 12.

Lindsey Wilson came out firing and jumped out to a 14-1 lead, going on runs of five and nine-straight points. After Pikeville (17-3, 3-2 MSC) cut the lead back to single digits 18-10, Lindsey Wilson responded with an 8-0 run to increase its lead to 26-10.

The Bears promptly responded with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 26-18. The two teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the half before the buzzer sounded and Lindsey Wilson held a 41-32 advantage.

The Blue Raiders outshot the Bears 45.7 to 40.0 percent from the floor in the opening half and made three, three pointers compared to Pikeville's one.

Costley scored 12 of his points in the half as Wallace added 10.

The Blue Raiders picked up where they left off in the first half and stretched the lead to 16 points, the largest of the affair, with a 52-36 lead with 15:38 remaining in the second after a Costley bucket. But Lindsey Wilson offense went into a dry spell and went over seven minutes without a made field goal. During that stretch, the Blue Raiders were 0-for-5 from the floor, committed three turnovers and were whistled for eight fouls.

While the Blue Raider offense struggled, the Bears pounced with a 24-6 run to take their first lead of the contest at 60-58 with 7:08 remaining in the game. Lindsey Wilson retook the lead 61-60 after a Wallace three-point play, but Pikeville scored on its ensuing possession to take the lead right back and would not relinquish it for remainder of the game. The hot shooting never returned for Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders went just 2-for-8 from the field over the final six minutes of the contest as Pikeville closed things out on a 20-8 run to take the 80-69 victory.

In the tough, physical contest, Pikeville shot 20 more free throws than Lindsey Wilson due to five Blue Raiders fouling out. There was a total of 54 fouls in the game.

Pikeville had five players in double figures led by Darrion Leslie who scored a game-high 19 points and was one rebound away from a double-double. Michael Lewis recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Clint Nwosuh had 13 points, Desmond Medder and Marshall Bennett each had 10 points.

Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Saturday against No. 20 Cumberlands (Ky.) at 4 p.m. CT at Biggers Sports Center.
