Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball defeated Fisk (Tenn.) 93-85 in overtime on Tuesday night at Biggers Sports Center.
After both teams were unable to connect on their final attempts in regulation, Lindsey Wilson (16-7) outscored the visiting Bulldogs (2-17) by a 16-8 margin in overtime to come away with the win.
Dmitry Utolin matched a career high with 27 points, scoring 18 in the opening half. Nic Brown recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds, matching his career high in both categories, while collecting three blocks. Charles Sutton scored 22 and fell one rebound shy of a double-double, while DJ Lambert matched a career high with 10 rebounds, falling one point short of a double-double. Bryan Wallace added 10 points, all coming in the first 20 minutes.
The majority of the contest consisted of both squads putting together surges of points, only for the opposition to answer each run.
Lindsey Wilson fell behind early after a trio of three pointers put the Bulldogs ahead 9-2. The Blue Raiders answered with a 13-2 run to take a 15-11 lead at the 13:27 mark after a field goal by Utolin.
Each team held a slim lead over the next five minutes before Lambert put Lindsey Wilson out front 22-21. Fisk responded with a 6-0 run to take a 27-22 lead, only for the Blue Raiders to answer with 11-straight points to go up 33-27 at the 4:43 mark following another basket by Utolin.
Once again Fisk put together another flurry of points, scoring nine-straight to retake the lead at 36-33. Wallace put an end to the run with a step-back three to level the score at 36-36, but Fisk answered with a three to go up 39-36. The Blue Raiders scored the next four points and Brown rejected the final Bulldog shot before the half as LWC took a 40-39 lead into the break.
Both teams shot well from the floor, LWC hitting 50.0 percent and Fisk making 44.1 percent. The Bulldogs edged the Blue Raiders in made three pointers 8-6, but Lindsey Wilson held the rebounding advantage 20-15.
The second half saw more of the same, with each side scoring points in bunches, but never creating much separation from their opponent.
Lindsey Wilson went up 51-44 with 16:20 to play following a basket by Brown, but Fisk countered with a 12-5 run to tie the game at 56-56 with 11:22 to play as the teams continued to trade buckets.
An Utolin three-point play with 8:40 to play tied the game again at 63-63. Brown later knocked down a pair of free throws to put LWC ahead by seven, but Fisk came back with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 77-77 with 1:24 to play.
Lindsey Wilson's final attempt fell short and caused a shot clock violation with 8.7 seconds to go, while Fisk's final attempt inside the arc fell short at the buzzer as the game went to overtime.
The Blue Raiders took complete control in overtime as Fisk scored the first basket, only for Lindsey Wilson to score 12 straight to take an 89-79 lead. The Bulldog sharpshooters were unable to consistently connect in the extra period as Fisk went 3-for-11 from the floor in overtime and LWC pulled out the 93-85 win.
Both teams finished the game shooting above 40 percent, but shot below 35 percent from three-point range. Fisk made 14-of-42 attempts from beyond the arc, while Lindsey Wilson hit 7-of-22 attempts. The Blue Raiders dominated the rebounding battle with a season high 55 boards.
David Patton led Fisk with 35 points, followed by Addison Miller with 26 and Walter Arnold with 16.
Lindsey Wilson returns to conference play on Saturday when the Blue Raiders travel to Life (Ga.).
