Men's Tennis falls in MSC Tournament title match to Campbellsville 5-4

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team suffered a 5-4 setback to Campbellsville (Ky.) in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship match on Monday night at Kereiakes Park.

The No. 5-ranked Blue Raiders (16-6) led 4-2 in the match, but was unable to close things out as the No. 9-ranked Tigers (19-3) rallied for the come-from-behind win.

Monday's loss snaps a streak of five-consecutive MSC Tournament titles for Lindsey Wilson dating back to the 2012 season.

In what was a back-and-forth affair, the Blue Raiders trailed early, rallied for the lead, but eventually saw the match slip away late into the night.

Brendan Aguilar and Victor Ahlbeck put the Tigers ahead 1-0 after defeating Ivan Solans Diaz and Tomas Depiaggio 8-3 at the second-seeded doubled match. Denis Porcic and Alonso Tellez leveled things up with an 8-4 victory over Alejandro Reyes and Chrys Castro at the top flight. Campbellsville went back out front after winning the third doubles match 8-6 as Adrian Sabrojo and Mario Belloni defeated Javier Raya and Filip Persson to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

The Blue Raiders quickly took back control of the match after winning the next three points and coming within a single point of clinching the title.

Porcic (ranked No. 3 in NAIA singles) defeated No. 5-ranked Aguilar in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, at the top singles matchup to even the match at 2-2. Raya put LWC ahead for the first time with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Belloni at the No. 5 match. Solans Diaz then made it 4-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Reyes at the second flight.

Cobi Ho suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss at the No. 6 match to Castro as the Tigers cut the lead down to 4-3.

The final two matches would go into third sets.

Tellez won the opening set at No. 4 singles 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but he fell 6-1 in the second set. He trailed 4-1 in the third set before defaulting as Campbellsville evened the match at 4-4.

It came down to the No. 3 singles matchup between Depiaggio and Sabrojo. Depiaggio dropped the first set 6-4 and was behind 5-3 in the second set. But the sophomore from Corrientes, Argentina rallied to force a tiebreaker victory in the set, sending the match to a third set. He eventually ran out of steam as Sabrojo edged out the win 6-2 to give the Tigers the 5-4 win and their first MSC Tournament victory.

Earlier in the day, the Blue Raiders defeated Cumberlands (Ky.) 5-0 in the semifinals to earn a spot in the championship match.

Lindsey Wilson led 3-0 after sweeping the doubles matches, including a 9-7 victory at the third flight by Persson and Raya. Porcic and Raya then won their respective singles matches at No. 1 and No. 5 to clinch the match and send the Blue Raiders into the championship.

Next up for the Blue Raiders is the NAIA National Tournament, where Lindsey Wilson is expected to receive an at-large bid based on their national ranking. The tournament field will be released on May 6.
