Coffey blanks Cumberlands in PKs, Men's Soccer advances to MSC Tournament finals

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- David Coffey stopped a pair of Cumberlands' penalty kicks to help Lindsey Wilson men's soccer advance to the Mid-South Conference Tournament championship match following a 2-2 draw tonight in the tournament semifinals at Jim Ross Field.

Akean Shackleford and Alexander Koziolek each buried their penalty kicks while Coffey stopped two shots and the Patriots (10-6-2) missed two more to advance with the 2-0 PK win.

Following three straight misses -- two by Cumberlands and one by Lindsey Wilson -- Shackleford calmly gave the Blue Raiders the 1-0 advantage in the shootout. Coffey saved the next Cumberlands try and Koziolek extended the lead to 2-0. Coffey secured his second PK save on the subsequent Cumberlands attempt to send the Blue Raiders to the championship match.

Lindsey Wilson (12-3-1) advances to play top-seeded Life (Ga.) on Saturday in the tournament finals. The Running Eagles beat Campbellsville (Ky.) today 1-0 in the other semifinal.

Lindsey Wilson wasted little time in the opening 45 minutes denting the scoreboard.

Shackleford -- coming off a four-goal performance in a quarterfinal win over Shawnee State (Ohio) -- tried to give the Blue Raiders the early lead in the sixth minute, but Cumberlands goalkeeper Akililu Zambataro turned the shot away. While Zambataro made the save, he could not hold on to the ball and Bruno Henrique secured the rebound and chipped the ball into the goal for the 1-0 lead. The goal is Henrique's seventh of the season.

The lead was short-lived as the Patriots got the equalizer on an own goal in the ninth minute.

The two teams played even until the 40th minute when Amin Fernouchi pushed the Blue Raiders back in front.

Shackleford played a ball into the middle of the field and Fernouchi hit a one-timer inside the right post from 25 yards out for the 2-1 lead. Fernouchi's goal is his second of the season.

Cumberlands once again pulled even, this time off a set-piece.

Marvin van der Made rose above a crowd in the penalty box and headed in Sergio Infantes' corner kick to the near post in the 49th minute to tie the game at 2-2.

The Blue Raiders outshot the Patriots 15-11 for the match, including 4-3 in shots on goal.

Coffey and Zambataro each ended the match with two saves during the first 110 minutes in the draw.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 16, against Life in the championship match at Jim Ross Field.
