Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team remained undefeated in conference play after defeating Freed-Hardeman 2-1 away from home this afternoon. Nathaniel Onyina Opoku got on the score sheet once again while Victor Cavalcante found the game-winner in the 90th minute.
Lindsey Wilson (8-1-1, 7-0 MSC) outshot the Lions (5-7, 1-6 MSC) 17-4 with a 9-3 shot on goal mark. Opoku scored his 10th goal of the season in the victory while also setting up the game-winner for Cavalcante in the 90th minute. The goal is just the second this season for Cavalcante.
The first half was a frustrating one for the Blue Raiders. A team who hasn't had a problem scoring goals as of late, only had two shots on goal in the first half of play. The Lion's defense held firm, keeping the Blue Raiders scoreless in a half of play for the first time since September 24th against Pikeville (Ky.).
The Lions nearly got the scoring open in the 50th minute after a shot from Kenneth Ramirez hit the post and rebounded back into the Blue Raider defense. Twenty minutes later the Lions got a massive save from their goalkeeper Calum Langdale to keep them in the game, rushing out of his box to deny two Blue Raiders the opportunity to put away a loose ball in the box.
Despite the best efforts of the Lion's defense, the Blue Raiders finally found a way through with Opoku beating Langdale in a 1 v 1 situation in the 73rd minute, slotting the ball home in the lower right-hand corner for the 1-0 lead and his 10th goal of the season.
Minutes later, Freed-Hardeman responded with a goal of their own as Lawson Ashby found the net to even things up at 1-1.
With things looking like they were heading towards overtime, Opoku made a darting run down the left-hand side of the box and lofted up a cross for a Blue Raider to attack. The ball landed at the feet of Cavalcante on the edge of the area who brought it down and hit it on the volley, beating Langdale and giving the Blue Raiders the 2-1 win.
Lindsey Wilson continues their road trip of conference games on Saturday, October 16th as they travel to take on Bethel (Tenn.). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.
