Men's Basketball falls short of upset bid, loses 65-58 to Georgetown

Box Score 1

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson men's basketball provided a defensive gem but struggled offensively in a 65-58 loss to No. 17-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) today at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (5-13, 1-12 in the Mid-South Conference) held the Tigers below 39-percent shooting for the game, including 2-for-21 from beyond the 3-point arc. But Lindsey Wilson could not validate that defensive effort on the offensive end -- hitting just 36.2 percent (21-of-58) of its shots.

The final shooting total looked impossible early as the Blue Raiders jumped out to a 10-0 lead, making four of their first seven shots. It took Georgetown (14-4, 11-4) nearly five minutes to dent the scoreboard and end the Lindsey Wilson early spurt.

The Tigers used the next 10 minutes to outscore the Blue Raiders 18-10 to tie the game at 20-20 with 4:43 left in the half. Georgetown continued the momentum into the latter stages of the half to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

Georgetown extended the lead to 10 (42-32) in the early stages of the second half before Lindsey Wilson mounted its comeback.

The Blue Raiders scored six straight points -- thanks to a pair of and-one plays by Elijah Jordan and Josh Smith. Jordan finished with a game-high 23 points while Smith added 15 points.

The two teams exchanged baskets over the next four minutes before Lindsey Wilson climbed within two points (47-45) with nine minutes remaining in regulation. The Blue Raiders had a chance to tie the game on their next possession but committed a turnover that ultimately helped spark a Georgetown run.

The Tigers scored five straight and seven of the next eight points to extend their lead and Lindsey Wilson never managed to climb within one possession again.

Kyran Jones led the Tigers with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 5:30 p.m. CT on Monday, Feb. 8 as the Blue Raiders host Cumberland (Tenn.) at Biggers Sports Center.
