Box Score 1 COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer squad defeated 14-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) 2-0 on Thursday night in a huge conference showdown at Ray Wells Field. In a chippy matchup between the Blue Raiders (4-5-3, 3-2-1) and the Patriots (7-3-3, 4-1-2), LWC pulled out the win in a game that recorded 18 fouls.
Despite the loss, Cumberlands outshot Lindsey Wilson 23-21 but only had three total shots on goal compared to seven by the Blue Raiders.
After a solid 36 minutes of defensive play by both teams, LWC struck first with a Monwabisi Mngqibisa goal to make it 1-0. Amin Fernouchi cleared the ball from deep in Blue Raider territory that found Mngqibisa in the Blue Raiders attacking third. Mngqibisa gathered the ball and broke into the penalty area before chipping the Patriots keeper Pablo vazquez just outside the six yard box.
Lindsey Wilson doubled their lead when UC recorded an own goal. Alexander Koziolek's free kick crashed off the body of Stephen Appiah and into the goal.
Pablo Costa recorded his first shutout in his Blue Raider career. He finished the match with three saves including a key diving save in the second half to keep the Blue Raiders lead intact.
The Blue Raiders jump back on the road to compete this Saturday on Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m. CT to face Pikeville (Ky.) at Bob Amos Complex.
