Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team picked up the program's 16th Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship on Friday with a 2-1 result over Bethel (Tenn.). With the win the Blue Raiders are set to bring home the Ray Wells Championship Trophy which was named after former LWC men's soccer coach Ray Wells earlier this season.
Lindsey Wilson made use of two first-half goals in the contest to claim the title. Lindsey Wilson went a perfect 3-0 during the tournament, knocking off No. 5 Cumberlands, No. 1 Tennessee Southern, and No. 2 Bethel. During the regular season the Blue Raiders fell to all three of their postseason foes.
With the result, Lindsey Wilson earns the MSC's automatic qualifying bid into the 2022 NAIA National Championship.
In just the third minute and following a Bethel corner, Lindsey Wilson quickly flipped the field. Sadam Masereka gathered possession near midfield. He raced past two defenders before firing a shot low far post that curled around the Wildcats goalkeeper for the score.
Masereka then set up the Blue Raiders second goal of the match. The freshman drove hard into Bethel territory, reaching just outside of the 18-yard box before being fouled. Alexander Koziolek then set up shop with a free kick from 19-yard out and slotted a curving shot into the upper-right-hand corner of the goal. The strike came in the 40th minute.
Bethel outshot the Blue Raiders 8-3 in the half, but LWC managed a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Wildcats controlled play over the opening 10 minutes of play in the second half, peppering three shots, two on goal as their third shot found the back of the goal in the 55th minute.
Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Pablo Costa deflected a cross before stopping a shot on a rebound. The ball deflected away to Adrian Musubi who finished into an open goal to cut the LWC lead in half to 2-1.
The Blue Raiders' nearly pushed their lead back to two during the 67th minute but Koziolek's penalty kick was ruled no good.
Lindsey Wilson finished the contest with an 8-4 shots on goal mark while Bethel managed one more corner kick at 7-6. Pablo Costa finished with three saves in the match.
The Blue Raiders now wait for the opening round, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Nov. 17 at host sites around the country. Lindsey Wilson will learn about their seeding and pairings on Monday, Nov. 14 at Noon CT with the NAIA Selection Show.
