Strong Second Half Pushes Men's Soccer past Top-Seed Tennessee Southern

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team went on the road and took down top-seeded Tennessee Southern 3-1 during the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference tournament. The win propels the Blue Raiders to the tournament finals set for Friday.

After a scoreless opening half, the Blue Raiders sprang to life with two goals early in the second, before adding an insurance goal in the 90th minute to secure their spot in the MSC Championship.

From midfield, Alexander Koziolek played a ball over the top to Alvaro Verwey who gathered it just inside the 18-yard box. Breaking deep into the left side of the penalty area Verwey fired a cross that deflected off a Tennessee Southern defender. The sudden change of direction froze Firehawks goalkeeper Ajay Murray and snuck inside the near post for an own goal in the 49th minute.

Lindsey Wilson tacked on a second goal in the 67th minute. A Blue Raider cross sailed in front of the Tennessee Southern goal and was eventually retrieved by Jaland Larmond in the corner just before rolling out of bounds. Larmond took a few touches before sending in a cross that was then chipped around the Firehawk keeper by Verwey.

Tennessee Southern got on the board in the 90th minute when Rodrigo Costa scored into the top-right corner of the goal on an assist from Alejandro Blanco.

The Blue Raiders returned fire scoring with just under 20 seconds to play when Larmond broke into the penalty area, one-on-one with the keeper, and buried the late insurance goal.

The Blue Raiders controlled the pace of play in the match after outshooting the Firehawks 17-13 including 7-4 in shots on goal.

Reigning MSC defender of the week, Pablo Costa finished the night with three saves in goal for Lindsey Wilson.

The first half was an even affair as neither squad was able to place one of their shots on frame. The Blue Raiders managed a 7-4 advantage in shots in the half while racking up six corner kicks to the Firehawks one.

Lindsey Wilson will play for the program's 16th MSC tournament title and second straight against the winner of Bethel (Tenn.) and Cumberlands (Ky.). The championship match is slated for Friday at 3 p.m. CT.
