Box Score COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 5 Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team defeated 12th-ranked Bethel (Tenn.) 1-0 on Wednesday at Watler S. Reuling Stadium/Ray Wells Field.
Sadam Masereka scored the lone goal for the Blue Raiders (8-2-1, 2-0 MSC). Monwabisi Mngqibisa led the Blue Raiders with three shots and two on goal. Masereka also added a pair of shots on goal. Pablo Costa recorded six saves in the shutout victory.
Bethel (8-2-1, 2-1 MSC) held a 12-8 edge in shots with a slight 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. It was a physical battle that saw 27 total fouls and six yellow cards.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes. Lindsey Wilson thought they had a goal in the early minutes in the first half but the played was called back due to ball being out of bounds earlier in the play. Bethel had seven shots in the first half compared to the Blue Raiders' three. The Wildcats also had five shots on goal while Lindsey Wilson recorded just one.
The Blue Raiders were finally able to get on the board in the 63rd minute. After a foul in the box, Masereka converted the penalty kick to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 advantage. Masereka had a chance to increase the lead on another penalty kick in the 75th minute. His attempt was stopped by a diving save from the Bethel goalkeeper. Each team recorded five shots in the second half while the Blue Raiders had three on goal and the Wildcats had one.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action on October 11 when they travel to Campbellsville for a 7 p.m. CT matchup.
