Women’s Basketball Beats Indiana University Southeast 87-74

Columbia, KY. - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team came out on top against Indiana University Southeast with a 87-74 score on Thursday night at Biggers Sports Center.

This win was the tenth of the season for the Blue Raiders (10-3), who keep their unbeaten record of 5-0 at home. Jordyn Stephens, Amelia Hodges, and Lucy Patterson tied as top scorers for LWC with 17 points. Patterson recorded her third double-double of the season connecting seven out of nine shots, converting four out four free-throws, and led her team in rebounds with 13. Hodges made five of her 10 field goals, feeling confident from far out as all of them were 3-point shots. Stephens recorded 6-of-10 shooting and converted all 4 attempts from the charity stripe.

The Blue Raiders got off to a fast start as they took an 8-0 lead in the first couple of minutes, forcing a timeout request from the Grenadiers (3-6). It proved helpful as they cut the gap to three points, making it 12-9 with 5:46 left in the quarter. Then they went on an 8-5 run to level points for the first time, 17-17 with 52 seconds remaining. Claire Fleming put Lindsey Wilson ahead by 20 to 19 before the end of the quarter by converting her free throw.

Indiana Southeast opened the second quarter with a 5-3 run, putting themselves ahead 22-24 with 8:03 left thanks to 2 points by Makenna Wilson. The game reached an even point with 6:08 remaining as both teams sat on 28 points with Patterson converting from the charity stripe. Both teams proceeded to exchange points and the lead for the remainder of the quarter. The game headed to halftime with the Grenadiers ahead by 39-42 thanks to a layup by Leah Miller.

Hodges added another three-pointer to her night to start the third quarter. This period was marked by the lack of points and the amount of misses and rebounds in a row. The score midway through the quarter was 48-47 in favor of Lindsey, meaning only 13 points in total were scored in total. The Blue Raiders seemed to have an extra gear the rest of the quarter as they were able to extend their lead to a six-point gap by the end of the period. The score was 61-55, such a gap had not been established since the start of the first quarter.

Indiana Southeast could not figure out a way to counter this gain of momentum from LWC at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Blue Raiders went on a 13-2 run, increasing the gap to 74-57 with 6:59 left. The Grenadiers responded with a 13-5 run, cutting the deficit to 9 points with a score of 79-70 and 2:32 left. Indiana had no more timeouts left at that point, and the Blue Raiders took advantage of the fact. They finished the last period on a strong 8-4 run while keeping possession as long as they could. Lindsey claimed victory with a final score of 87-74.

The Blue Raiders are back in action at 1 p.m. CT on Dec. 16 when they travel to take on the University of Pikeville (Ky.).
