Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches on Day One of GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team opened play at the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic losing a pair of matches. The Blue Raiders (3-5) opened the day falling to Valley City State 3-1 and fell to McPherson 3-1.

Eliza Burzio led the Blue Raiders against Valley City State with 12 kills while Lindamara Conceicao also had double digit kills with 10. Luiza Goncalves had 26 assists while Wiktoira Stankiewicz had 30 digs.

Elizabeth Moore tallied a team-high for Lindsey Wilson against 10 kills against McPherson. Goncalves recorded 25 assists while Laura Milori had 15 digs.

Lindsey Wilson vs. Valley City State: 1-3 (25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 22-25)

The Blue Raiders trailed 10-5 before scoring five of the next seven points to cut their deficit to 12-10. Following two-straight points by the Vikings, Lindsey Wilson rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 17-14 lead. Valley City State answered back following a time out scoring the next four points to retake the lead. Trailing 19-18, the Blue Raiders scored seven of the set's final nine points.

Valley City State got off to a strong start in the second set scoring six of the first seven points. Trailing 8-3, Lindsey Wilson went on a 5-1 run to cut the Vikings lead to 9-8. Valley City State then scored six of the next eight to go back up by five. The Blue Raiders answered with a 6-2 run to get within two 17-15. Valley City State evened the match closing out the set on a 6-3 run.

Trailing 3-2, the Blue Raiders scored six of the next seven points to lead 8-4 in the third set. The Vikings then  went on an 8-2 run to lead 12-10. Tied at 13, Valley City State scored five of the next six points. The two teams exchanged points for the rest of the set as the Blue Raiders fell  25-18.

The Vikings opened the fourth set scoring the first three points before LWC scored four of the next five. Valley City State then took a 9-5 lead following a 4-1 run. Lindsey Wilson fought back from a 12-8 deficit scoring four straight tie it at 12. After back-to-back points for the Vikings, the Blue Raiders went on a 5-2 run to lead 17-16. LWC increased its lead to 19-17 before Valley City State closed out the match on an 8-3 run.

Lindsey Wilson vs. McPherson (15-25, 26-28, 25-17, 16-25)

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the first set after a 4-1 run. LWC answered right back scoring the next four points to lead 8-7. McPherson responded scoring five of the next six points to lead 12-9. The Bulldogs continued to build their lead and as they closed out the first set on a 7-1 run.

Tied at two in the second set, LWC jumped out to an 8-3 lead with a 6-1 run. Following back-to-back kills by the Bulldogs, the Blue Raiders pushed its lead back to six at 11-5. Coming out of a timeout McPherson went on a 9-0 run taking a 14-11 lead. The scoring runs continued in the set as the Blue Raiders then rattled off five straight points to retake the lead. McPherson jumped out in front again scoring five of the next six points to lead 19-17. LWC scored six of the next seven points to lead 23-20. The Bulldogs scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 24. McPherson prevailed in the back-and-forth set winning 28-26.

Much like the second set, the third set got off to a back-and-forth start with neither team leading by more than two for the first 12 points. Trailing 7-6, LWC scored 11 of the next 13 points to  lead 17-9. The Blue Raiders pushed their lead to 19-10 before the Bulldogs cut it to 19-14. Lindsey Wilson extended the match winning the set 25-17.

McPherson jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set. The Blue Raiders went on a 3-1 run before the Bulldogs scored six of the next seven to lead 14-7. McPherson remained in control for the rest of the set as the clinched the match winning 25-16.

The Blue Raiders are back in action on Saturday taking on Grand View (Iowa) at 11:30 a.m. CT and Benedictine (Kan.) at 2 p.m. CT
