FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team pushed 14
th-ranked Grace (Ind.) to five sets and gave the Lancers everything it had in the fifth but ultimately fell short to open the weekend in Indiana.
The Blue Raiders trailed 11-6 and 14-10 in the final frame before cutting the deficit to a single point. Grace, however, got the last push it needed out of its own timeout to seal the match.
Ola Wyrzkowska, Luiza Gonçalves, and
Elisa Burzio each posted double-doubles in the losing effort. Wyrzykowska paced the Blue Raiders on both ends of the ball with 17 kills and 20 digs, while Gonçalves dished out a match-high 42 assists to go with 15 digs, and Burzio finished with 13 kills and a career-high 17 digs.
Lindsey Wilson fell behind 10-5 early in the opening set before stringing together a six-point run to take the lead. From there, the two sides went back-and-forth on the scoreboard. Knotted at 21-21, a kill from Wyrzykowska sent the Blue Raiders on a 3-0 run. Despite a small response by the Lancers, Lindsey Wilson held on to take the first, 25-23.
In the second, the Blue Raiders hit a match-best .289 and led 15-11 midway into the frame. Grace went on an 8-0 stretch to switch the four-point edge in its favor, but a subsequent five-point swing by Lindsey Wilson restored the Blue Raiders' lead. A 23-21 advantage was not enough for Lindsey Wilson to fend off the Lancers down the stretch, as they scored six of the last eight points of the set to take it 27-25.
The Lancers jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the third. A kill by
Lara Danesi got the gears grinding for the Blue Raiders who then went on a 10-2 stretch. Lindsey Wilson's advantage grew to as many as nine points, culminating with a Lancer attack error to give the Blue Raiders a one-set lead in the match.
Grace pulled away late in the fourth set and capitalized on Lindsey Wilson miscues to take control in the fifth.
The Blue Raiders received additional offensive contributions from Danesi's 11 kills, as well as
Elizabeth Moore with nine and
Brenda Arango with six successful attacks.
As a team, Lindsey Wilson outhit the Lancers .203 to .181 and produced 10 service aces, including five from Gonçalves.
The Blue Raiders return to the Turnstone Athletic Center at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday for a doubleheader against Cornerstone (Mich.) and Rio Grande (Ohio).
