Football closes in style, beats No. 22 Cumberland 20-17

LEBANON, Tenn. -- Lindsey Wilson football delivered the final two blows in a back-and-forth 20-17 win over No. 22-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) today at Nokes Lasater Field.

Pryor Lamb completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Henry Cason with just over six minutes left in the game to give the Blue Raiders a 20-17 lead. Kameron Barnett sealed the win with an interception in the final minute to help the Blue Raiders secure their 12th come-from-behind win in the program's history.

The win marks the second straight over a ranked foe for the Blue Raiders -- Lindsey Wilson beat then-No. 25-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) two weeks ago.

Lindsey Wilson shined the brightest in the fourth quarter, amassing 142 of its 313 total yards for the game while limiting the Phoenix (6-3, 2-3) to 80 yards and a turnover in the decisive frame.

In a game in which the two teams exchanged lengthy offensive drives and momentum-killing defensive stops, the Blue Raiders definitively won on special teams.

Lindsey Wilson's first score came when Brian Kelley blocked a punt, scooped up the loose ball, and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown. Davontaye Saunders averaged 28.5 yards per kickoff return, including a 46-yard return and nearly a kick-return touchdown that was called back on a penalty. Harris Nichols pinned the Phoenix inside the 20-yard line on four of his five punts, averaging 36 yards per punt.

Cumberland was limited to 11 yards of kick-return yardage, surrendered the blocked punt, and missed a field goal.

The Phoenix took a 3-0 lead following a Jack Kantner 25-yard field goal midway through the first quarter. The score marks the first time this season the Blue Raiders' opponent scored first in the game.

Kelley erased the deficit with his first career touchdown, giving the Blue Raiders the 6-3 lead with just under five minutes left in the first half. Lindsey Wilson took the 6-3 lead into the half.

In the second half, the two offenses matched the defense's first-half dominance.

Cumberland took the second-half opening drive 86 yards to take a 10-6 lead. The Blue Raiders responded with a three-play, 75-yard drive -- the final 66 yards coming from Saunders -- to push Lindsey Wilson in front 13-10.

Saunders finished with 70 rushing yards on four carries, part of a 178-yard rushing day for the Blue Raiders. David Gardner Jr. led Lindsey Wilson with 84 rushing yards.

The back-and-forth continued early in the fourth quarter as the Phoenix used a 10-play, 92-yard drive to retake the lead. Luke Holloway connected with Jarrius Rogers on a 36-yard touchdown pass to give Cumberland the 17-13 lead.

But once again, Lindsey Wilson responded.

The Blue Raider offense orchestrated its longest drive of the season, driving 93 yards on nine plays to take the 20-17 advantage. Lamb and Cason connected on the game-winner for the fifth lead change of the game. Cason finished with four catches for 74 yards and the touchdown.

With the lead in hand, the Blue Raider defense forced a three-and-out on Cumberland's next-to-last drive, and Barnett all but ended the game with an interception one drive later for the win.

Cameron Rankins led the Lindsey Wilson defense with 10 tackles, his third straight game with double-digit tackles. Braden Ford finished with six tackles and a pair of sacks.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, November 9, as the Blue Raiders host Bethel (Tenn.) at Parnell Family Stadium.
