Blue Raiders Fall to Red Storm on Day Two of Bevo Francis Classic: Shelton Receives All Tournament Honors

RIO GRANDE, Ohio- The Blue Raider women's basketball team fell to #10 Rio Grande (Ohio) 90-66, Saturday afternoon at the Bevo Francis Classic.

The Blue Raiders were led by Taylor Guess who posted a 19 point outing shooting 66 percent from behind the arc connecting on two of three along with Claire Fleming, Saniyah Shelton, and Emily Cox who ended in double figures with 13, 11, and 10 respectively. 

Rio Grande started the first ten minutes of play on a 6-0 run that lasted 1:02. Lindsey Wilson answered with a basket by Jarie Thomas assisted by Fleming. At 6:30, the Blue Raiders answered with a 6-0 run of their own, lasting 1:01, that started with Shelton connecting on two free throws cutting the Red Storm lead 11-10. Rio Grande closed the quarter on a 14-3 run that lasted 3:13, extending their lead to 25-13 at the end of the first quarter. 

The Red Storm defense continued to cause issues for the Blue Raider offense. After Kaylee Darnell for the Red Storm (8:59) and Fleming for the Blue Raiders (8:36) traded three-point baskets, there was a 1:22 scoring drought for both offenses. Fleming scored the final six points of the first half for the Blue Raiders, adding to her point total of 13 for the half, cutting the Red Storm lead down to 12, trailing 44-32 going into half time. 

To start the second half of play the Red Storm went on a 10-2 run that lasted 2:03 to extend their lead over the Blue Raiders 54-34. With the help of Cox and Guess cashing in on a three point basket apiece, and Natalie Gentry, Thomas, and Fleming baskets, the Blue Raiders were able to cut the Red Storm lead down to 13 with 2:43 left in the third quarter of play. Rio Grande continued to slice through the Lindsey Wilson defense ending the quarter on a 8-0 run extending their lead to 74-53. 

In the final 10 minutes of the second half, the Blue Raiders went on a 7-3 that lasted 3:02 to cut into the Red Storm lead 77-60 with 6:32 to play. Rio Grande ended the game on a 13-6 run to secure the victory and hand the Blue Raiders their second loss in two days. 

Shelton received Women's All Tournament honors averaging 13.5 points, four rebounds, and four assists. 

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Dec. 6 to compete in the Cumberland University (Tenn.) Classic.
