Women's Basketball Wins Home Opener Against (RV) Pikeville


COLUMBIA, Ky. -  The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team defeated (RV) Pikeville (Ky) 75-65 Tuesday in the home opener at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (3-0) shot 42.6 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from behind the arc. Lindsey Wilson connected on 12-16 from the charity stripe. Claire Fleming connected on five-of-six from the free-throw line contributing nine points. Saniyah Shelton led the Blue Raider offense with 18 points and five assists. Jarie Thomas, Amelia Hodges, and Taylor Guess were the other Blue Raiders who scored in the double digits with 14, 13, and 13 points. 

 Pikeville opened the game scoring six of the first eight points. The Bears led for most of the first quarter. With 3:15 to go the Blue Raiders offense started to take off, ending the quarter on a 12-5 run leading the Bears 22-17. 

The Blue Raiders continued their offensive run to open up the second quarter scoring on their first play at 9:23 off of a lay-up by Thomas that was assisted by Fleming. Lindsey Wilson took a nine-point lead of 40-31 going into the half off of a last-second three at the buzzer by Natalie Gentry

Lindsey Wilson went cold from the three-point line, not hitting a single shot from behind the arc in the third quarter. Pikeville went on to outscore the Blue Raiders 25-16 tying the game 56-56 headed into the fourth quarter. 

Rachel Bush led the offensive charge for the Bears leading all scorers with 22. To start the fourth quarter Pikeville's Allie Stone made a layup at 9:07 seeming to spark the Bears offense, followed by two Bush free throws that gave the Bears the lead. With 5:23 left in the game Hodges banked in a three point basket to tie the game at 63-63. 

The Blue Raiders closed out the game on a 15-2 run led by Hodges who accumulated eight points connecting on two-of-three from behind the arc and knocking down two-of-four from the charity stripe. 

Lindsey Wilson will be back in action on November 11th, at 6 pm CT in Biggers Sports Center to take on the University of Cincinnati-Clermont (Ohio).
