Fleming's 17 Point Outing Propels Blue Raiders Past Bears

COLUMBIA, Ky.- Lindsey Wilson defeated Shawnee State 56-51 to pick-up their eighth win of the season. 

Leading the offense for the Blue Raiders was Claire Fleming with 17 points going 13-14 from the freethrow line. Jarie Thomas was the second leading scorer picking up nine points and nine rebounds. All eight players who entered the ballgame contributed to the Blue Raider offense. 

Scoring was opened up in the first 10 minutes of play as Emily Cox connected on a three at 8:53. Four Blue Raiders scored in the first. Thomas connected on a freethrow to send the Blue Raiders into the second quarter with a 12-9 lead. 

Thomas picked up right where she left off in the first quarter, converting on an offensive rebound and put-back with 9:13 to play in the second quarter. Shawnee went on a 5-2 run that lasted 2:39 tying the score 14-14. Fleming converted on two free throws giving Lindsey Wilson the 16-14 advantage with 5:55 left before halftime. The second quarter was a back and forth battle trading buckets with the score deadlocked at 23-23 heading into halftime.  

The Blue Raiders came out of halftime on a 7-0 run, led by Guess with four of the seven, that lasted 2:10 giving them a 30-23 advantage. Shawnee State was able to answer with two three point baskets by Jada Johnson and Alexia Deaver cutting the Lindsey Wilson lead 33-29 with 5:24 left to play in the third. The Bears and Blue Raiders traded baskets the last 4:11 with Lindsey holding on to a 41-38 advantage headed into the final ten minutes of play. 

Shawnee State went on a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter that lasted 2:06 giving them a 44-42 advantage. Fleming answered back by connecting two free-throws and converting on a coast-to-coast layup, as well as Cox connecting on a three pointer assisted by Guess giving Lindsey Wilson the 48-47 advantage with 5:27 to play. With 38.8 seconds left Shawnee State grabs a defensive team rebound and calls a timeout to advance the ball to their side of the court, Thomas comes up with a big rebound with 25.2 seconds left and hits Fleming for the outlet pass in transition who is then fouled and sent to the freethrow line with 21.3 remaining. Fleming connected on both free throws making the Lindsey Wilson lead 54-51. Fleming is sent to the line with 1.6 left where she connects on both giving the Blue Raiders a 56-51 victory over the Bears. 

Lindsey Wilson will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against Oakland City (Ind.) at 2 pm CT in Biggers Sports Center for the second day of the UC Bank Classic.
