WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Lindsey Wilson and Cumberlands (Ky.) met for the first time on the dirt diamond in two years on Friday afternoon. The homestanding fourth-ranked Patriots utilized a strong presence at the plate and put forth 27 hits en route to a sweep of the Blue Raiders.
Brylee Pickerell batted 2-for-6 with a double on the day to lead the visiting offense, while
Elizabeth Funk and
Olivia Franceschi each contributed a run batted in.
Game One: Lindsey Wilson 1, No. 4 Cumberlands 9 (6 Innings)
The Patriots struck for three runs on four hits in the opening inning and carried that momentum to a series-opening victory.
After Cumberlands extended its advantage to 5-0 in the third inning, Lindsey Wilson cut into the deficit in the top leg of the fourth frame when a single to left-center field off the bat of Funk plated
Kendall Dailey.
Cumberlands locked down the Blue Raiders' bats from there and eventually ended the game an inning early with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth inning.
Savannah Robbins (L, 3-4) worked 2.1 innings in the circle for Lindsey Wilson and retired three Patriots on strikes while allowing five earned runs on eight hits.
Abigail Cruz closed out the final three innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits.
Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 1, No. 4 Cumberlands 7
The Blue Raiders kept pace with the Patriots through the early stages of game two.
Cumberlands jumped out to a 2-0 cushion with a run scored in both the first and second innings, then Lindsey Wilson got one back on an RBI-single by Franceschi to bring home Pickerell.
The home side ultimately tallied the necessary insurance runs to clinch the win, scoring five runs across the fifth and sixth innings.
Grace Adams (L, 1-6) dealt five complete innings of work from the circle for the Blue Raiders. The sophomore recorded one strikeout before freshman
K'Asia Palmer checked in for the last inning and tacked on a strikeout of her own.
Lindsey Wilson and Cumberlands meet again at 1 p.m. CST on Saturday for another twin bill.
