Blue Raider Volleyball Swings Past Brescia

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Blue Raider middle blockers combined for 23 kills and five blocks as the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team pulled away from Brescia (Ky.) for a home-opening, 3-1 victory.

Elizabeth Moore and Savanah Pippin rocked the Bearcat defense for 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Ola Wyrzykowska also cracked double-figures with 10 successful attacks to go with a team-best four service aces.

As a team, Lindsey Wilson recorded its best hitting percentage of the season at .319 and held Brescia to a .038 attacking mark.

Back-to-back kills from Elisa Burzio opened the match and sparked an 8-0 run from the Blue Raiders. The hosts continued to hammer down, racking up 16 kills in the first set to the Bearcats' two. A 6-2 stretch, punctuated by consecutive service aces by Wyrzykowska, sealed a 25-12 opening set win for the home side.

Brescia responded, however, in the second. The road team took advantage of crucial Lindsey Wilson errors to take the frame 27-25.

In the third, the Blue Raiders bounced back with a strong 6-2 start, eventually ballooning the advantage to 16-5. Brescia miscues down the stretch only deepened the wound and allowed Lindsey Wilson to roll on to a 25-10 set win.

The Bearcats led by as many as four points early in the fourth frame, but the hosts swiftly found a rhythm, largely on the back of Moore, who put down eight kills in the final set. Trailing 14-13, a four-point swing by Lindsey Wilson, with a pair of kills from Pippin, put Brescia behind for good. A service ace by Luiza Goncalves finished things off and improved the Blue Raiders' overall record to 2-3.

Goncalves led her side with a match-high 31 assists. Alessia Bergesio chipped in 11 digs.

Lindsey Wilson loads up for another road trip this weekend in Rio Grande, Ohio for the Emileigh Jo Cooper Memorial Classic. The Blue Raiders' first match is slated for 11 a.m. CST on Friday, August 30 versus West Virginia Tech.
