Homestand for Volleyball Opens on Friday versus Georgetown

9/19/2024 2:00:00 PM

COLUMBIA, Ky. – On Friday, the Lindsey Wilson volleyball team opens a four-match homestand when Georgetown (Ky.) comes to Columbia for a Mid-South Conference showdown.

The Blue Raiders, who are 2-0 in league play for the first time since 2021, are rolling on a six-match winning streak. Their most recent conquest was a four-set, nail-bitter at (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) on Tuesday, a match that saw each set decided by the two-point minimum.

Georgetown enters the weekend in the midst of a five-match drought that includes conference setbacks to Campbellsville (Ky.) and Cumberlands. The Tigers have also suffered losses to Shawnee State (Ohio) and Ohio Christian, two teams Lindsey Wilson have faced and defeated earlier this season.

Senior Gareth Bruce actively ranks fourth in the conference for kills per set and service aces per set. She is the only attacker on Georgetown's roster with at least 50 kills on the year. Freshman Faith Miller is feeding most of Bruce's attempts, as she leads the Tigers' offense with 144 assists.

Defensively, Reece Speed sports the Mid-South's second-best digs per set ratio at 4.59. With over 1,000 digs for her career, Speed is coming off a 2023 campaign in which she totaled 597 digs and 42 service aces.

Lindsey Wilson has scored two exciting wins in conference action so far this year, despite being outhit 0.204 to 0.175 in those matches. Ola Wyrzykowska, Lara Danesi, Elisa Burzio, and Luiza Goncalves all have recorded at least one double-double across the Blue Raiders' previous three contests. Wyrzykowska comes into Friday 11 kills shy of 500 for her career and has posted 10 or more in seven consecutive matches, while Danesi and Burzio have each turned in 10 or more digs in three of their last four respective appearances.

Wiktoria Stankiewicz is another Blue Raider to keep an eye on. The junior went off for 26 digs at Asbury (Ky.) on September 12 before finishing with 22 at Cumberlands on Tuesday.

Live coverage on Friday begins at 4 p.m. CST with the junior varsity match, then continues with the varsity match at 6 p.m. on the Lindsey Wilson Sports Network.
