COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team remained perfect in September on Friday evening, picking up another Mid-South Conference victory with a 3-0 sweep of Georgetown (Ky.).
The Blue Raiders bested the Tigers on the attack and held a 53-to-44 advantage on total digs.
Luiza Goncalves recorded her third double-double in as many conference contests, finishing with 30 assists and 12 digs.
Savanah Pippin hit 0.500 from the middle behind her nine kills and
Elisa Burzio paced the offense with 10 successful attacks.
Georgetown grabbed the early lead with three quick points and built a 6-3 cushion. A service error, however, shifted the momentum in Lindsey Wilson's favor as the hosts pieced together a 9-3 run to go ahead 12-9. Following a Tigers' kill, Burzio hit back with two strikes of her own to send the Blue Raiders on a five-point stretch. Lindsey Wilson led 20-12 before Georgetown slowly crept back to cut the deficit to three points. Despite the push, the Blue Raiders held on to take the opener, 25-21.
Consecutive kills from
Elizabeth Moore and
Lara Danesi helped the home side to a 5-2 edge to start the second frame. The visitors fought back and eventually powered to a 13-10 lead. Georgetown did everything it could to keep Lindsey Wilson in its rearview mirror. Trailing 21-19, the Blue Raiders received a spark from Moore and went on a 5-0 run to earn a set-point opportunity. The Tigers managed to fend off Lindsey Wilson's first two chances, but a costly service error stopped them in their tracks.
A 3-1 lead for Georgetown to open the third was short-lived. Miscues by the Tigers and kills from the likes of Moore, Danesi, and Pippin put the Blue Raiders on a 14-3 stretch that carried them to a convincing 25-14 set win.
Friday night's triumph extends Lindsey Wilson's overall and home winning streak to seven matches each. It is also the Blue Raiders' eighth consecutive win against a Mid-South opponent.
Next up for Lindsey Wilson is a non-conference bout at 7 p.m. CST on Wednesday, September 25 against Midway (Ky.).
