COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team put forth a dominant effort on Friday evening, downing Bethel (Tenn.) in straight sets to remain undefeated in Mid-South play and extend its winning streak to nine matches.
The Blue Raiders outkilled the visiting Wildcats 45 to 23 and held their opponent to sub-.150 attack percentages across each of the three sets. Meanwhile, Lindsey Wilson finished with its fourth-highest hitting percentage of the season at 0.294.
For the third consecutive match,
Elisa Burzio led the host's offense with 11 kills. Fellow Italian
Lara Danesi totaled nine kills and three service aces, while the middle blocker duo of
Savanah Pippin and
Elizabeth Moore each produced eight kills and combined for only two attacking errors.
Bethel snagged an early 2-1 lead in the first set before three-straight kills by Burzio opened up a six-point Blue Raider run. Back-to-back kills and an ace from Danesi helped push the score in Lindsey Wilson's favor, 12-5. The Wildcats slowly worked to trim the deficit with a 6-2 swing, but a 5-1 response by the home team with strikes from Moore and Pippin restored their comfortable cushion to a 19-12 advantage. Despite the two teams trading points late, the Blue Raiders stayed in control to take the first set, 25-17.
The visitors, again, started strong to begin the middle frame, taking a 3-1 lead. An 11-3 shift toward the Blue Raiders quickly put the momentum on their side. Two successful attacks apiece from Pippin and Moore down the stretch made up four of Lindsey Wilson's final five points of the set en route to a 25-14 win.
Lindsey Wilson dominated the final set, including an 8-0 stretch from Danesi at the service line in which she dropped two aces. A subsequent 4-2 sequence with kills from Moore, Luiza Goncalves and
Ola Wyrzykowska solidified the Blue Raiders' grasp on the victory.
Goncalves closed the night with a match-high 38 assists, while
Autumn McCutchen paced the defense with a dozen digs.
The four-match homestand concludes at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday morning when Lindsey Wilson hosts Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.). The Lions are coming off a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Campbellsville (Ky.) on Friday afternoon.
