COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team capped off a perfect three-match weekend on Saturday morning, avenging an earlier loss to Shawnee State (Ohio) with another 3-0 decision.
Elisa Burzio tallied her second career double-double behind a 10-kill, 10-dig performance and
Ola Wyrzykowska extended her double-digit kill streak to four matches with a team-high 14 successful attacks.
Elsewhere for Lindsey Wilson,
Luiza Goncalves dished out 37 assists, while
Autumn McCutchen's 20 digs are the most by a Blue Raider in a match this season.
The Blue Raiders won all three sets by the two-point minimum, demonstrating their relentless grit against a team that dealt them their only blemish in the last eight outings. Saturday's result also pushes Lindsey Wilson's home non-conference winning streak to 50 matches.
A pair of kills from Wyrzykowska helped Lindsey Wilson out to a 4-0 lead in the first set. In fact, the Blue Raiders created multiple four and five-point advantages in the opener, but the Bears found an answer each time. Still, the home side never relinquished its lead and ended the frame with back-to-back kills to go up a set in the match.
Another four-point scoring run got the ball rolling for Lindsey Wilson to start the second frame. Shawnee State, again, countered to eventually grab a 15-13 edge. The visitors' lead grew to 19-16 to draw a Blue Raider timeout. Then, out of the break, a kill from
Elizabeth Moore sparked a 5-0 Lindsey Wilson rally. The Bears did not shy away, however, sending the set past the 25-point threshold, but not too far. With Shawnee State facing set-point up 25-24, a costly service error followed by kills from Wyrzykowska and
Savanah Pippin swiftly shifted the momentum and the set in Lindsey Wilson's favor.
In the third, Shawnee State led 15-12 after a three-point stretch and continued to fight off a series of responses from Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders ultimately peaked in front off a Bears' miscue, then went on a three-point run of their own on three consecutive kills from Burzio to take a 23-20 lead. Despite Shawnee State staying around, back-to-back hits by Burzio and Danesi iced the sweep.
Lindsey Wilson opens Mid-South Conference play at home on Tuesday, September 10 against Campbellsville (Ky.). Junior varsity action opens the doubleheader at 5 p.m. CST, followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m. CST. Fans are encouraged to wear blue for Tuesday's "Battle of Highway 55."
