OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – No. 14-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's tennis suffered a 4-0 defeat against No. 5-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday at the ITA NAIA Men's Tennis Indoor Team National Championship at the Overland Park Racquet Club.
Tennessee Wesleyan (1-0) secured the doubles point and followed up with three straight singles victories to clinch the match over the Blue Raiders (0-2).
The Bulldogs grabbed the early advantage with back-to-back wins in doubles. Octavio Volpi and Juan Carlos Garcia topped German Delcanto and Lucas Marques 6-2 on court two, followed by a 6-3 win from Agustin Gaia and Maceo Simpson over Hans Schubert and Santiago Passoni on court one. The match on court three was left unfinished with Jaume Barcelo and Marcal Miret leading 5-4.
In singles play, Tennessee Wesleyan maintained their momentum, claiming three consecutive victories to seal the match. David Leon defeated Passoni 6-4, 6-2 at the fourth-seeded match, while Garcia bested Schubert 6-4, 6-4 on court two. Volpi, the No. 4-ranked singles player in the NAIA, clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Delcanto at No. 1 singles.
The remaining matches went unfinished, with Barcelo heading to a third set and Miret half way through the second set.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action in the consolation semifinals against the University of Northwestern Ohio at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow.
