Blue Raider Defense Holds Strong Against Late Run from St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA- Lindsey Wilson defeated St. Thomas (Fla.) 66-57 Sunday afternoon in the Fernandez Family Center. 

Amelia Hodges led the offense with 15 points, going  2-of-3 from behind the arc. Saniyah Shelton was the other Blue Raider in double-figures with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Meadow Tisdale, Claire Fleming, Taylor Guess, and Emily Cox also contributed nine points apiece. 

Tisdale opened the scoring at 9:39 on a tough lay-in in the paint to lead 2-0 early. St. Thomas answered back with two free throws at 8:02 to level the playing field at 2-2. At 5:47, the Bobcats went on a 6-2 run that lasted until 3:20 to lead 8-4. A three from Fleming at 2:54 on an assist from Tisdale cut the lead back down to a one point game at 8-7. St. Thomas closed the first quarter on an 8-3 run to lead LWU 16-10.

A free throw from Shelton at 8:29 cut the Blue Raider deficit to 19-11. With 7:18 on the clock, Cox converted on an offensive rebound and put back that sparked an 11-2 Blue Raider run that lasted till 4:04 to cut the Bobcat lead to 25-24. Shelton drove to the free throw line and kicked it to Cox for a three with 31 seconds on the clock to give Lindsey Wilson its first lead since 9:39 in the first quarter and a 30-29 edge headed into halftime. 

St. Thomas regained the lead 32-30 out of the break on a three from Maddie Scharrenberg at 9:26, but was answered back by Jarie Thomas at 9:02 to tie the game at 32-32. Shelton found Hodges behind the arc at 7:03, draining a three and growing the lead to 37-34. Guess knocked down a mid-range jumper at 4:50 to extend the Blue Raider advantage to 39-35. Lindsey Wilson closed out the third quarter on a 12-2 run to lead 49-36.

Shelton got the Blue Raider offense going in the fourth quarter, penetrating deep in the paint for a layup at 9:20 to lead 51-37. From 8:41 to 7:25 both teams traded buckets with LWU holding on to a 56-42 advantage. With 4:37 on the clock, Taylor Guess finished a tough bucket in the paint to extend the advantage to 62-46. Cox found herself on the free throw line connecting on 1-of-2 free throws at 2:15, followed by Tisdale getting fouled and making her way to the free throw line to knock down both free throws at 2:03 to lead 65-46. Guess made her way to the charity stripe shortly after to knock down one at 1:50 to lead 66-46. St. Thomas closed the game on an 11-0 run but fell with Lindsey Wilson taking the 66-57 victory. 

Women's hoops will be back in action on Monday at 12 P.M. CT to take on Florida Memorial University.
