Women's Basketball Falls Just Short To No. 6 Patriots

COLUMBIA, Ky.- Women's Basketball falls just short to No. 6 Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands 70-68.

Four Blue Raiders ended the game in double digits with Saniyah Shelton leading the way with 16 points and nine rebounds. Jarie Thomas added 15 points alongside two blocks, while Taylor Guess posted a double-double picking up 11 points and 11 boards. Grace Brewer came off the bench contributing 11 points, going two-for-four from deep, and four rebounds. 

After falling behind 2-0 nine seconds into the ballgame, Thomas got the offense started for the Blue Raiders at 9:11 after Emily Cox picked up an offensive rebound and found Thomas in the short corner. Thomas then converted two free throws the next possession to give Lindsey Wilson the early 4-2 lead. The Blue Raiders continued their run with two free throws from Guess and another jumper from Thomas, extending the lead to 8-2. Lindsey Wilson ended the quarter on a 9-2 run, holding the Patriots scoreless from 4:46 to 0:09, giving the Blue Raiders a 22-10 edge headed into the second quarter.

At 9:44, Claire Fleming penetrated down the right side finding Shelton on the wing to cash in on a three putting the Blue Raiders up 25-10. The Patriots answered back with a three by Kaylie Monday and a layup by Anaia Hoard to cut the lead to 25-15 with 8:08 on the clock. At 7:49, Cox found Fleming at the top of the key for a wide open three to extend the lead back to 28-15. After a back and forth second quarter, the Blue Raiders went into the half with a 37-28 edge as Cox knocked down two free throws with 0:39 to spare before the half. 

The Patriots jumped out on a 9-2 run that lasted 2:08 and was eventually stopped on a bucket at 7:35 from Shelton to stop the bleeding and keep the Blue Raider lead 41-37. Cumberlands went on a 9-4 run that gave them their first lead of the game since 9:11 to play in the first at 46-45 with 2:42 to play in the third. Shelton put an end to the run with a step back jumper on the right wing giving Lindsey Wilson back a 47-46 lead. The Patriots ended the quarter on a 6-2 run giving them the 52-49 advantage headed into the final ten minutes of action. 

To start the quarter, Guess picked up an offensive rebound, dishing it to Fleming who was able to penetrate to the nail, and pitch it Thomas for a three at the top of the key with 8:38 on the clock. With 4:24 on the clock, Guess steps to the charity stripe, converting on two free throws, making it a 65-60 ballgame. With 0:29 left on the clock, Shelton pulls up for a jumper at the elbow to dead-lock the game at 68-68. With 4.7 left, the Patriots knocked in two free throws giving them a 70-68 lead. With a chance to win it, Fleming tries for a floater off the left side leaving it just short, making the deciding score 70-68 in favor of the Patriots. 

Women's basketball will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. CST in Biggers Sports Center to take on No. 7 Lady Lions of Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.). The men's match-up will follow immediately after at 3 p.m. CST against the No. 4 Lions.
