LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – On a windy third day in the Peach State, the Lindsey Wilson softball team nearly came away with a pair of top-25 upsets.
Melaina Tucker batted 4-for-6 with a double and reached a fifth time on a walk, while
Sam Hartman drove in four runs on four hits to help pace the Blue Raider offense.
In the circle,
Grace Adams made one relief appearance and one start, dealing 9.1 total innings and striking out nine.
Game One: Lindsey Wilson 4, No. 25 Coastal Georgia 7
A seven-run lead for the Mariners proved too much for the Blue Raiders to overcome, despite a impressive late push that saw Lindsey Wilson bring the tying-run to the plate in the seventh inning.
Coastal Georgia tallied five runs in the second inning, then added its only other two runs in the fourth to go in front 7-0.
In the fifth,
Katie Lorenz led-off the frame with a double to left field, followed by a single from Tucker to move pinch runner
Atavya Fowler up to third base. During the subsequent at-bat, a double-steal by Tucker and Fowler gifted Lindsey Wilson's its first run.
Later in the inning, Hartman doubled to the grass to plate Tucker before sophomore
Natalie Wandrie stepped up and skied her fifth career home run over the right field fence, trimming the deficit to three runs.
The Blue Raiders brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the sixth inning and the tying-run in the seventh but could not convert on either instance.
Starting pitcher
Kayden Murray worked two complete innings and allowed five earned runs on four hits before giving way for
Hallie Roberts to pitch two innings of her own.
Adams took over on the rubber for the final two frames and held the Mariners hitless while picking up three strikeouts.
Game Two: Lindsey Wilson 5, No. 9 Georgia Gwinnett 6 (8 Innings)
A strong start offensively by the Blue Raiders, coupled with a solid performance from Adams in the circle pushed the homestanding Grizzlies back on their heels. Georgia Gwinnett, however, found its rhythm late and stormed back to win in extra innings.
Lindsey Wilson first crossed the plate in the second inning when a wild pitch rolled to the back stop and gave
Brylee Pickerell time to score from third base.
Then, in the third frame, Hartman was heard from again as she singled home Wandrie, and Pickerell collected her first RBI off a base-hit to center field, plating Hartman, who went on add another quality at-bat in the fourth inning when her single sent home
Brooklynn Becker.
The Grizzlies cut into the Blue Raiders' lead with a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but Lindsey Wilson answered back with Hartman driving across Tucker on a one-out single to right field in the sixth inning.
Heading into the seventh inning, Adams had limited Georgia Gwinnett to just three hits with the first of which not coming until the fourth inning. A four-run at-bat by the hosts in the final scheduled inning knotted the score at 5-5 and gave them the momentum needed to eventually earn the win in the eighth.
All told, the Blue Raiders recorded a season-high 13 hits against the Grizzlies, their highest single-game output since April 29. 2023.
Lindsey Wilson is slated to host Bryan (Tenn.) for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. CST on Tuesday, February 18 at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.
